Is this weird?

So, since we have been working on buying a house, several people have made comments about having a housewarming party and setting up a registry for it.  Is this weird?  I have never heard of registering for a house warming party, but then again, none of our friends have bought houses yet either.  DH and I have pretty much decided we don't want to do this but I really just want to know if this is normal and if y'all did such a thing.

Re: Is this weird?

  • Several of my friends have purchased homes, but I've never heard of it. That's what wedding registries are for... To me. That's weird to do a hosewarming registry.
  • A housewarming party isn't weird, but I think a housewarming registry is weird.  And tacky.

That's what we both said.  My mom is the first one that said something to me and I just thought that maybe since she is older that is why she said something.  But then, someone around our same age commented on my facebook about registering too.  Weird.  I just want to show off my new house, not open presents.  :-)

  • For most of my friends, I already purchased a nice wedding gift. AND almost everyone I know has a fully stocked house anyway (or had 2 combine). Registering for more (newer) stuff seems a tad greedy. Maybe I want a new cookie sheet for myself!!
  • I have never heard of a housewarming registry. That's why we have wedding registries.

  • I've heard of them - I believe they're an option at Crate & Barrel, etc. - but I have never known anyone to actually register for one, and I would find it pretty tacky if they did.

If you have a housewarming party, people will probably bring you a bottle of wine or something along those lines.

  • I know some people that create one at places like Crate & Barrel so they can get a completion discount to buy furniture and stuff they want. I think you can get 15% off, just like on their wedding registries.

  • I had a housewarming party when I bought my condo (pre-DH). The party was a fun way to show off my place to my friends, but I didn't expect gifts and I didn't register for any and if people brought anything when they came, it was a bottle of wine. I would definitely give the side-eye to any housewarming party that included a gift registry.

  • Tradition aside, I think house-warming registries make more sense than wedding registries.  I mean, how many of us have stored unused wedding gifts in their original boxes for months or years while apartment living before we have an actual house to use them in?

But as far as a gift-giving occasion, weddings make more sense to be giving a generous gift than buying a house I guess.  And I certainly wouldn't expect to get gifts at a house-warming party.

see, I get this - but then there's no need to actually advertise the registry.

I've heard of them before but think they are uber-tacky.
