apartments and jobs

Hi ladies! My husband and I are moving to Chicago because I got a fellowship at Northwestern, and I was wondering if you could give me some advice. Firstly, about apartments. We've found 2 that we really like, one near N Clark and W Pratt and the other near W North and N Kedzie (Yes, I realize they're nowhere near each other. We have some specific criteria and these meet them).

Secondly, my husband just started looking for a job and was unsure what to expect. He is in IT, and right now is working as a Network Admin. Anybody know anything about what the job market in his field is like?

Thanks!

Jen

Re: apartments and jobs

  • I don't know anything about the IT market.  As far as the two intersections, I would personally go with the space on North Ave.  It's closer to the busier areas of the city.  The walkability score is lower for the North Ave area, but I think that's due to the park.  Just my two cents.  Enjoy the move!

  • I would pick the Clark & Pratt location because the metra & the red line are both within walking distance and it'll be easier to get downtown (or around) depending where your husband gets a job. Also, parking is decent around there. There's not much to do in that area. Andersonville & Evanston are sort of close. We are about 20 blocks NE of Clark & Pratt, but if you have a car or take the train/bus, it's not that bad.

Your H will have a better time finding a contract job right now than a perm job. Maybe even a contract to hire spot. If he puts his resume on monster.com, he'll get slammed with recruiting agencies call him. There are some good jobs on craigslist, smaller companies will post here since it's a much smaller fee than monster or even free to some.

  • will you be working at northwestern-evanston or at the northwestern medical campus downtown? my answer depends on that :)
  • The medical campus downtown.

We've been looking at some other apartments through apartmentpeople.com, these are some others that I found on my own, so I'm trying to do a little research on them.

    Thanks!

Also look by the lake if you don't need parking or are willing to pay for parking (we pay $75 month for a spot). We live by the lake and there are 3 buses right outside my front door that take me to Northwestern (where my doctor is) in less than an hour.

I also have found apartments on craigslist.org and also from driving around the area I like.

  • We found a really great apartment in Ravenswood that we're going to take! I'm so excited about it because it seems perfect and it's in a really great location. Can't wait to head out there!

Thanks again for all the advice!
