Possible move to Indy...

Hey ladies, I'm Carrie from Houston, TX and my DH and I could possibly be relocating to INDY for his work, and I was just curious if you could recommend any parts of the city/neighborhoods/or surrounding areas that are good to live in.  Thanks so much!!!

It depends on what you and DH are interested in.  I recommend either living on the North-side (Carmel/Fishers/Westfield) or down in the Greenwood/Bargersville area.  I have lived in both and have pros and cons for each.  I am currently on the south-side and really enjoy it but miss a few things from the North side (stores) but they are only a 25 minute away so I just don't go as often.

So what type of area of you interested in, that would help me narrow down a recommendation.

  • We currently live in the suburbs outside of Houston, but like the ease of not being too far from the city.  Also, traffic is something that we hate so avoiding places that are known for heavy traffic would be a plus :) thanks!

  • Ditto on pp's suggestions.  I live on the cusp of Zionsville-Carmel but (literally) just 5 minutes north of Indy.  It's a great location.  DH and I have thought about moving elsewhere in Indy but have a tough time with the thought because of missing out on our favorite stores and restaurants.

If you're concerned with school districts, Zionsville, Carmel, New Palestine, Greenfield, Hamilton SE (Fishers), and Franklin all rank in the top.  Washington Twp in Indy is pretty decent as well.

If you want to avoid traffic, stay away from Fishers.  Rush-hour traffic is obnoxious--not Austin obnoxious, but enough to be irritating.  If you're willing to forgive traffic, though, Fishers isn't that bad.

    Matt loves Munkii!!!
  • To be honest I think it depends on where you are going to live.  The trend is people living north of the city to get away from "traffic"  but I think the complete opposite has happened.  More people are moving north and working closer to downtown.  There is so much traffic coming heading south in the morning but the reverse in the evening, everyone is heading North.

I work on the NW side of Indy and husband works close to downtown.  We live on the West side and love it.  I really do not have to deal with much traffic.  And the prices of homes or apartments are much cheaper then the north side.  Greenville is another nice area and that is on the south side

Where ever you decide to look, #1 recomendation is to stay on the outside of 465.  It is the main highway that makes a circle around the city.  The areas on the inside of 465 tend to be rough...the outside of 465 is much nicer.

We live in Fishers and L-O-V-E it! it's more affordable than the carmel/ zionsville/ westfield area but still a VERY nice suburb of Indy. The traffic CAN get a little rough around exit 5 (the Fishers exit off of I-69) But its not usually a stand still or anything, and the longer you live there, the more you learn routes to take that avoid that couple mile stretch of interstate that gets congested.

I don't know if you're looking for a house to buy, or an apartment complex to rent in, but if you could give me that information, i can p-mail you some nice places to rent.

Also, is he going to work closer to down town, or somewhere outside of the city?

What types of things do you like to do? This could help me give you some more ideas of places that you might like.

Do you have any pets? I can give vet recommendations also!

  • Hello everyone!

    This is a great ?...

My husband and I are also planning on moving to Indy.  In fact, we are in town right now and just got done viewing apartments.  We are in a little bit of a situation b/c I will be working downtown while my husband will either be working in way NE Indy or SW Indy.  We checked out some places today, but I was wondering how safe they are....can anyone help out?

Only recommendation I can give, like I did with the OP, stay on the outside of 465, the highway that runs around the city.  Inside 465, especially on the East side, can be very rough...

  • Hi ladies! I will start out my post saying we have relocated away from Indy, so the advice you are getting from PPs is excellent and more current

The suburbs mentioned-Fishers, Carmel, Westfield, Zionsville, Avon, Brownsburg, Greenwood, etc are fantastic. Great schools, tons of shopping, etc.

And the post about inside 465 being not so hot is a great guideline--the only areas I mention inside there is Meridian/Kessler. With the slower real estate market there are some great condos and homes for rent. This is a gorgeous neighborhood, though older than an of the areas mentioned above. When we lived in Indy this was perfect for us as I worked downtown and DH worked on the far westside. He mostly had the reverse commute, while I had a shorter distance.

Again, the info that you have gotten is great, just offering my 2 cents! Best of luck!

When will you know about where he is working?  What places did you check out?  What does way NE Indy mean exactly?

I recommend outside of the 465 loop it makes a difference.  I got a nicer place when I moved to Greenwood for less money then when I was up in fishers.  I am also close to 65 and only 30 minutes to the north side.

  • I have lived NE, S, NW, and border W side of Indy- I would suggest Plainfield- it's further west of Indy, great schools, new shopping, NO TRAFFIC like every where else and you just jump on 70 to get you downtown in 15-20min!  PLus 5 minutes from the airport!  And it's slowly growing where as I like the other areas I have lived in but I have been here now 10yrs and the traffic on 36,69, 31, and 37 drive me nuts.  Just a suggestion, check it out!  I also liked Zionsville but it's pricey compared to Carmel, Avon, Greenwood.  I do agree that alot of the shopping stores are on the north side, but I rarely go up there to shop.  Good Luck!

I disagree. Suburban/country life is not for everyone. If she's avoiding traffic, the suburbs might not be the best option. Have you seen I-69 at 5pm? It's not a road I care to be on!

  • Don't get me wrong, I am by no means suggesting the Northside outside 465, I don't go anywhere near I-69...but just because you live on the outside of 465 does not mean  you have to live in the country.  Trust me I am from PA where you do live in the country, and no where in Indianapolis is the country.  Hey if you want to live in the city, move downtown, but good luck with paying rent because its outrageous!  If you live just on the outside of 465 you get the best of both worlds, away from traffic yet 15 minutes to downtown.

However, and I do not mean to offend anyone, but if you are in the inside of 465 on the West, South or East side...its is ghetto and run down.  I used to live on 38th street on the outside of 465, paid about $725 for rent in an apartment, cross over 465 to the inside on the same street.  Rent was $350-400 and you could tell why.  The neighborhoods are not nice, businesses are closing down and buildings are run down.

The only neighborhood I was even consider living in on the inside of 465 is Speedway...that is the only exception.

I would highly suggest the west side near Avon, but still in Marion county.  Once you get into Hendricks county which the town of Avon is in, taxes and houses are more expensive.  I liked Plainfield & Brownsburg, as well as Greenwood.

  • I definitely disagree... not every area inside of 465 is bad, in fact most aren't. We LOVE our house and if I were to tell you the location you would immediately think it's in the ghetto. We're just north of 38th off of the Kessler that goes N/S in a neighborhood called Northern Estates. In fact the largest house in Indiana is in our neighborhood. We're in Washington Twp. school district and a 5 minute drive to downtown. Also Meridian Kessler and Meridian Hills are great areas. Broad Ripple too although it is IPS school district. I've found the traffic to any outlying town to be pretty bad, Fishers especially. Don't immediately settle on the suburbs.
  • While I agree to a certain extent not all areas inside of 465 are bad.  I live in the meridian kessler/broad ripple area and there are TONS of great homes not just in my area but directly north south east and west.

While you are correct that just inside of 465 isn't that great you have to be aware that with every city there are some areas that are good and some that you should stay away from.  Looking at the neighborhood and the condition the houses are in gives you a pretty good idea of the type of area it is.  Hope this helps.

  • There are a lot of places inside 465 that are great areas to live in - Broad Ripple and Fountain Square are good examples.

If his job is downtown, I would reccomend the Southside side based on your OP of hating traffic.  We live in Perry Township and my commute into downtown for work is 15 min in traffic.  Way better than coming from the Nside.

Being right between downtown and Greenwood was have lots of options for shopping, eating out, entertainment, etc.

Also, like someone already said, you can get a lot more or a nicer home for the same money than on the Nside.

  • We lived 3 years in Noblesville and love it.  We just moved and stayed in Noblesville but in the downtown area now.  We wanted an older home.  We love Noblesville.  DH works in Fishers.  Love that area too and his commute is only 13 minutes.  But the traffic for the Fishers exit is horrendous at times.  However we are from NYC so the traffic out here is no where near NYC.
