HVAC experts?

OK, so our new AC seems to be working great downstairs, and in our master bedroom... but everywhere else upstairs it is SOOOOO hot.  It's practically unbearable.  We've tried shutting ALL the vents downstairs and only leaving a few on upstairs and it's still not cooling the bonus room at all... like we can feel no airflow whatsoever.

Anyone have any HVAC knowledge?  We're almost wondering if there is something in the attic, some sort of control, that has turned off the airflow for upstairs.

 Any suggestions?

Re: HVAC experts?

  • you might want to get up in the attic-or send Zack up there- and see if there's a control or something. I know that our house has 2 separate units-one for upstairs and one for downstairs, so there are two separate controls and vents that we had to check when we moved in to make sure the airflow was actually working the way it was supposed to.

  • Thanks for the advice!  We only have one unit, but my dad suggested there may be valves or switches or something in the attic that directs air flow etc.  He and Zach went up there this weekend and couldn't find any for all the insulation.

We talked to a neighbor though who said his attic does have the control valves or whatever and when he bought his house (new construction at the time) the builders came and showed it to him but he has a different floorplan etc.  I think we're going to call the builders and see if they can give us some suggestions.

Also, we noticed last night that one of our dining room windows is a little foggy like there is condensation or smoke in it so we're going to see if it is still under warranty when we call the builders.  I'll keep you posted!

  • I'd definitely call the builder. My guess (Steve's too) is that there's a valve or switch somewhere under that insulation.
I'd check to see if that window's still under warranty too-if there's condensation or that smokey look, there's a seal that's cracked or broken-at least that's been our experience in past homes/apartments.
    Keep me posted!!!

  • Great, I think I'll call them now!

  • We FIXED IT!!!!!

I called yesterday and the builder told us where the switch would be for the damper.

It was NOT where they said it would be... BUT at least once Zach knew that a damper switch existed it got him to stay up there and look harder.  He finally found it clear behind the furnace in the middle of the backside.  I couldn't have reached it if I tried!  Anyway he found it and flipped it and now our home is WONDERFULLY comfortable in all rooms!
