Wilmington area nesties come in...

We're relatively new to NC and live just outside of Raleigh. We want to do a family getaway to Wilmington or a neighboring beach that all of our boys can enjoy since we're so close to the area.  So I have 3 questions:

1.  Is Wilmington a good vacation spot for families?

2.  Any recommendations of any great places to stay?

3.  What attractions should we BE SURE to visit while there?

4.  Or is Memorial Day weekend the worst time to visit with 3 young kids?

FYI, our boys are 8, 3, and 2.

Re: Wilmington area nesties come in...

  • 1. It depends on what you want to do. I'd be more inclined to take a family to Carolina Beach or Topsail. Wilmington is very much a town, not a vacation destination.... and parking at Wrightsville is absolute hell.(unless you stay out there, and have parking)

    2. Look at renting a condo. VRBO.com is a common site.

    3. Make sure to go downtown in Wilmington if you can. It's very quaint, lots of great shops. Many great dessert places like Kilwins. I've heard the battleship is fun, but I've never been. The aquarium at Ft. Fisher is nice too. My sister likes to take her girls on the ferry to Southport and spend a day there... it's another cute town.

    4. Anywhere on the coast is INSANE for Memorial Day. I lived there 2.5 years and on Memorial Day, 4th of July & Labor Day we stayed inside... no need to venture out, everything was crazy packed.

  • Memorial Day is a really busy weekend here.  Wrightsville Beach is packed anyway during the summer, and it multiplies like crazy during holidays.

Carolina Beach is busy now too, but I would stay there (or Kure Beach) before Wrightsville on a holiday weekend.  The above poster suggested Topsail, but I would also suggest the Brunswick County beaches, such as Caswell Beach/Southport/Oak Island.  You can probably get a better rate on a vacation rental and it's much less crowded.

Downtown Wilmington is beautiful.  We have museums, lots of cool shops, and a riverwalk.   The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher is another good family place to visit.
