For those who buy local meat--USDA meat testing regulations

Not sure if this has been discussed buts very concerning.  I sent an email this morning.  The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the USDA is drafting new meat testing regulations. The costs associated with these regulations fall most heavily on small meat processors, and will force many out-of-business. Please TAKE ACTION TODAY. See www.landstewardshipproject.org and click on the ?take action? link.

Re: For those who buy local meat--USDA meat testing regulations

  • I've heard that there are some proposed changes that would make it very difficult for smaller businesses to comply. Ugh, not the right direction!!

  • Great, another step in the USDA's "get big or get out" management.  Ugh indeed!

  • Thanks so much for posting this!  It's something that has a lot of young, small farmers concerned.  I worked in food safety for a few years, and now own a farm, so I "get" the concern for the quality of our food.  But these laws will very likely put my farm (and others like it) out of business.

The USDA needs to set up scale-specific processing regulations, not one-size-fits-all policies that only Tyson and Cargill can afford!

  • My local farmer posted his concerns of this regulation on his website, but didn't link what you did--thank you very much for this--I will pass it on (and leave Tom Vilsack a message.)  Do we know how he pronounces his last name??

Just like it's spelled: Vil-sack with the emphasis on the first syllable
