Wineries

Hi ladies! DH and I are trying to plan a trip to Virginia, and I'd love your help! We're wanting to do a "wine tour" of some wineries in the area. We're from Ohio, so after looking at this website, it looks like we'll be focusing on the Shenandoah Valley Region or the Northern Virginia Region.

I guess I'm just looking for as much info as you can give me. What wineries are good to check out? Any recs of other things to do in the area? Any advice on where to stay?

Thanks! :)

Re: Wineries

  • Fox Meadow was an awesome experience for me!!  :o)  Went to Wolf Gap - or at least tried to; they are a new winery and unfortunately no one was home for us to try out their wines.  I *think* we went to Cave Ridge and they weren't bad; if I remember correctly they were the ones who recommended we check out Wolf Gap as they had helped them get their vineyard started.  Rockbridge is at the other end but they do have some of my favorite Virginia wines that I can find in local grocery stores - haven't been to their actual winery but have always loved them at our local wine fests. There was one other winery in Shenandoah we visited but I cannot recall their name. Supposedly they are wildly successful and their shop is pretty well set-up but I did NOT care for their stuff; most of it was too sweet for my tastebuds.

  • I would suggest considering the Charlottesville area.  If you click that section on the website you linked, you will see there are many wineries clustered in that area.  I have visited many of them and there is quite a variety.  It's fun to just visit many and really explore to find out what you like, as everyone has different tastes.

As for other things to do, you can visit Shenandoah National Park, if you're into great mountain views and hikes.  It's a short drive.

  • I'm from the Philly area and also looking at some wineries and came to this board for some recs.  I'm looking into the Charlottesville/ Lynchburg area although I'm not committed to this area.  It looks like there's some winereis and although my husband enjoys some wineries he also likes some breweries.  Hopefully we can visit some breweries.  We were going to go to Sonoma/Napa but I will be quitting my job for grad school so are trying to save some money.  I think we will get just as good of an experience here.  Some R & R, golf, wine, breweries, hiking, and maybe a balloon ride.  Are there any specific wineries or B&Bs/hotels you would recommend in that area?
  • I would recommend going to Chateau Morrisette... it is awesome up there!

How many wineries are you wanting to go to?

I live in SW Va and off the top of my head there is Valhalla vineyards in Roanoke and Chateau Morrisette in Floyd. You could go hiking to the cascades just past Blacksburg and there are tons of hotels/B&B you could go to in the area.
