Dallas restaurant reccs?

Hi there DFW! I live in CT and am heading to Dallas later this month for a trade show. We will be staying in the downtown area (I believe) and are looking for some dinner ideas. We are looking for basically any types of cuisine, $25 entree price and under, non-national-chain, stuff that will appeal to foodies. Any suggestions?? We will not have a car so reasonable cab distance from the Dallas Conv Ctr or downtown area in general... thanks in advance!

Also, any areas in downtown that I should avoid running alone (during daylight etc) or places that are especially nice? Finally, any nice shopping areas or something? We will have some down time the first full day we are there... thanks!

Re: Dallas restaurant reccs?

  • Do you follow Top Chef?  Chef Tre has a gig at Loft 610 in Plano - I love him and loved the experience there!
  • Most of the nice restaurants in town will put you over $25. Here's a few that are pretty good and easy on the wallet ~

La Duni, Mia's on Lemmon(I  recc the brisket tacos..they're awesome), Palomino at the Crescent Hotel...not foodie-ish, but pretty good. Medina at Victory Park (Moroccan), The Porch, Hibiscus (might be more expensive, it's been a while).

If you are able to stretch your budget a bit, I recommend going to Stephen Pyles Downtown. Great food from a local chef.

For shopping, head to Northpark Mall.

If your'e looking more foodie dives, you might try posting on the DFW board on Chowhound.

  • Hibiscus is my number one suggestion, but it will be more expensive than $25 a plate.

    Other suggestions:

Victor Tango's on Henderson, Cremona in Uptown (hole in the wall best italian), Kent Rathbun's Blue Plate in Preston Center.

  • Houstons! I know it is not just a Dallas restaurant..but I love it...there are several that I love, but I reccomend that one.
  • I agree with PP that Hibiscus is an AMAZING choice but a little higher priced then what you're looking for.  Just across the street is THE PORCH. It's owned by the same people and is a little lower on the price tag!  And the food is PHENOMENAL!  Definitely order at least ONE Cure 81 Ham and Mac & Cheese Casserole for the table!  I also recommend the Stodge Burger!
