Can I have some help from you NC ladies????

I am trying to plan weekend family a trip to NC mountain area for eight adults. We are wanting to rent a cabin near a lake or river. Does anyone have any suggestions, where to Stay/Eat/Fishing/Sightseeing and a little shopping.

Re: Can I have some help from you NC ladies????

  • Which part of the mountains? Is there a town you want to be near?
  • No specific area, just a great mountain view or close. I don't know anything about NC mountain area.
  • Well, I live near the Boone area where Appalachian State is. There are a lot of vacation rentals here, but most of them are privately owned and run by small rental companies. I haven't ever had to rent one since I live here, but I know some of the other ladies have rented houses in the mountains so maybe they'll pipe up.Try Googling "nc mountain vacation rentals" or "boone nc vacation rentals" and that should give you a lot of options. I know there are a lot of rentals in the Jefferson/West Jefferson area, but keep in mind that a lot of the touristy things are a pretty good drive from there.

There are a lot of outdoor activities and you can pretty much stop on the side of the road and fish in a river if you see one. If you want guided trips there are several places to do that. In Foscoe there is Foscoe Fishing Company.

A few other activities in the area: Grandfather Mountain, The Blowing Rock. The actual Rock is kind of a let down, but the town of Blowing Rock is really idyllic and fun to spend a day in. Tanger Outlets in Blowing Rock (for shopping). The Blue Ridge parkway for sightseeing. There is also a zippline and several of the ski slopes in the area do scenic chairlift rides in the summer.

As far as eating, you can pretty much throw a rock and find a good locally owned and operated restaurant.

There is also the Asheville area about two hours away from me. I know a lot less about it. It has more city amenities with the mountains still right there. Asheville also has the Biltmore House which is a lot of fun to visit.

Like I said, hopefully some other ladies with jump in with some of the things they've done and enjoyed in the area.

  • We stayed at Chetola resort in Blowing Rock for our honeymoon.  We were in the hotel, but they do have condos.  I have no idea how many people they'd sleep, though.  Like shoe said, Blowing Rock is a neat little town.  We had a great meals on that trip at Twigs and the restaurant at Chetola.  I always love the Blowing Rock Cafe.

My other favorite mountain town is Asheville, but we have only ever done hotels or B&B's there.  I'm sure there are vacation rentals in the area.  There are tons of great places to eat.  We especially like Jack of the Wood for a casual meal.  I've only ever eaten nice meals on Biltmore property.  Biltmore is pretty much my favorite place ever and well worth a visit.  Downtown Asheville has a lot of neat galleries and shops, as well as an art museum.  If you can plan your visit to coincide with the Belle Chere festival, it's wonderful (though at this point options for that weekend might be booked up).
