Coming to San Diego in July for Honeymoon!

What would you recommend. We are looking for fun restaurants with good food, good beaches and good shopping (at least I am). We've have never been to California before and are super excited to see a little piece of it.

Also what do you think of going to Tiajuana?

Re: Coming to San Diego in July for Honeymoon!

  • DO NOT go to Tijuana.  Its a PITA to get across the border and you will need a passport if you do choose to go down there.  TJ still has a fairly bad problem with drug cartel related violence and while it is not always happening in the tourist areas, there really isnt ANYTHING that you need to see or do down there that you cant do in the USA.

Are you planning on renting a car?  That will be a major factor in what you end up wanting to do in the city.  San Diego county is fairly large and our public transit system SUCKS!  :)

Go check the travel board right now...there is a San Diego restaurante thread with a ton of recommendations for all types of food.

Have you booked your hotel yet? ComiCon is in July and hotel rooms can be hard to find in downtown over that weekend.

Are you into sports?  OMBAC does their OTL tournament in July--it spans 2 weekends and its a huge, rowdy beach party with some Over The Line to break up the drinking :)  Its on Fiesta Island and its a ton of fun to go and just people watch.

  • Yes, we have booked our hotel and are staying fairly close to the Convention Center and we also plan on renting a car for at least 2 days.

     Good to know about Tiajuana.

What dates are you coming? Comic Con is at the Convention Center July 22-25, which essentially means Downtown is going to be packed to the gills. You may want to figure out how to plan on leaving early in the morning to be away from Downtown for as much of the day as possible if those are your dates. Seriously, when Comic Con is here, that's ALL that is here for those four days.

If you're coming a different weekend, you're totally clear :) I love Fred's Mexican Cafe in the Gaslamp - big big margaritas and tasty food. It's a much more casual place, but it might be fun for lunch one day.

I'd say you have to hit up Balboa Park. If you're here on a Sunday, I like going between 12-4 when the International Houses are open.

For brunch near the water, I recommend Brockton Villa in La Jolla. Love them.

And I second the assertion to stay away from TJ.

  • Sorry, I thought I mentioned that we were going to the Con for one day. Now that I reread my intial post it is a little vague...

Ahhhh, well that changes things :) Which day did you manage to snag tickets for? DH and I were lucky enough to get four-day passes last year, but this year we only managed to get tickets for Thursday.

If you're interested, Saturday night (the 24th), Video Games Live is presenting with the San Diego Symphony at the Civic Theatre. We went last year and, if you're a gamer or a pseudo-gamer or just like music, it's not to be missed. Tickets go on sale soon...I think either tomorrow or next week.

  • Very interesting. The Mr. is very much a gamer, I am not so much but I still know the big titles. We are going to Con on Saturday. We didn't want to spend the whole 4 days at Con because we are only coming to San Diego for 5 days and wanted to see as much as possible.

We're the same way, and I really like VGL. Essentially, the local symphony plays the soundtracks to the games while they project images on the screen. I thought I was going to be bored out of my mind, but I was actually the one who requested to go back this year! The Civic Theatre is also a really nice venue.

Did anyone mention the Wild Animal Park yet? I like it better than the Zoo. It's a bit of a drive from downtown (it's out in Escondido) but worth it if you have a car/a day to spend.
