DH and I moved here to Oahu Hawaii in December and we did not have much time at all to find a place to live and get settled in before he had to start working. So, we just agreed to move into one of the homes that military housing was offering, and then move out later, if we didn't grow to like it.
Well... needless to say, we did not grow to like where we are currently living, as a matter of fact, we hate it.
We are hoping to find a place out on the island that isn't too expensive and that we can live in for the next 3-4 years. (preferably not mil housing)
Anyone know of any decent places to live out here???

Re: Where to Live???
Hi! And welcome.
I see that you live in Pearl CIty, so I assume that you are maybe stationed at Pearl Harbor. I think if that is so, Aiea, Salt Lake wouldn't be too far of a commute. I know that you have discovered about the traffic on Oahu already
.
If traffic and the commute aren't an issue, then you would need to consider your budget and what side of the island you want to live on. Kapolei is an up-and-coming community that is the "second city" after Honolulu. Mililani is also a nice community. I could go on and on. Hopefully, I've given you a little to work w/.
Kalani gave you some good starting points.
My question to you would be, what are you looking for: commute times, budget, ammenities, close to beach?, likes/dislikes of current neighborhood.
I live in Waikiki and LOVE it. I bike/walk to work, walk a couple blocks to the beach, walk to all the touristy attractions, etc. If I lived in Pearl City, I prob would hate it too...doesn't meet my critera for outdoor living.
I also love the windward side but the commute might be awful
I feel like I am probably being to picky, since we live on an island and there isn't a lot of space and basically everything is built up.
What we don't care for about where we live now: We are surrounded by (really obnoxious) people on three sides with thin walls, it is a 2 story condo-type home, it is small, the general maintenance of the home is awful, the water heater is solar-powered - so hot water doesn't last long(sometimes we have no hot water all day), the a/c doesn't get to the whole home and only keeps the bottom floor cool.
What We Are Looking For:
2/3 BR Home or Duplex (preferably ranch style)- We don't really care for being surrounded by people. Close to beach would be nice, but we know it would be hard to find.
Budget - We get 2,000 in "housing allowance" so we would need to keep rent and utilities under that. DH would actually like to be making money from where we live.
Commute Time - Not A Big Deal At All
Ammenities - a/c, pets allowed, washer&dryer (or at least hook-ups), parking for two, kitchen with dish washer, refrigerator, stove/oven/range.
I think that is it...
That budget sounds tight for what you're looking for. Try scoping out the listings on Craigslist and post back here when you find some desirable options. Then we can chime in with some feedback. GL!
You may want to look into Woodstock Properties. We were renting a place in Ewa for about a year thru them, and were making money, not much. You have to consider:ranch style...haven't seen much on the island. You may not mind the drive, but what about your husband? He can catch the ferry from Ewa, but driving toward Pearl Harbor in the morning and afternoon, stinks to say the least. We moved on base from out threre because the drive was nuts. GL.
