Did anyone go to Elmhurst College (or) UIC?

My daughter and I were in Chicago last week visiting colleges and of the ones we saw, these are the two that she's interested in.  Just wanted to see if anyone may have gone here and had any feedback.

Thanks!

Re: Did anyone go to Elmhurst College (or) UIC?

  • I went to Elmhurst College and my husband went to UIC.  I loved Elmhurst.  I lived on campus and thought the dorms were nice.  My degree is in Computer Science and the teachers in that department are great.

My husband commuted to UIC and studied Movement Science.  He also really liked UIC.

If you have any specific questions, just ask!

  • I went to UIC and stayed on campus.  I really enjoyed my time there & they've done some extensive expansion projects since I graduated in '02.  What specifically did you want to know?

  • Funny enough, I have gone to both schools! I attended UIC for 3 years and transferred to Elmhurst for the nursing program which is where I am currently.

Sorry to say it, but if I could go back to UIC I would. UIC offers so much more than Elmhurst, the experience of living in the city, the diversity, the larger population. All of this I feel gives the attending students a chance to discover themselves and to grow. Unfortunatly, Elmhurst, since it is so small, can only offer so much. And many of the students have not had that chance to be out on their own and to learn and grow. I find that the feel at Elmhurst is more similar to an extension of High School rather than a college experience.

So, in my personal opinion, I would highly recommend UIC over Elmhurst, as I feel that UIC offers more and lends itself to more oppertunities and experiences that frankly, Elmhurst just cannot compete with.

I hope this helps with your decision.

  • I went to Elmhurst!  It definitely is a smaller and a tighter knit school.  I'm not sure what programs your daughter is looking at - but to give you an idea of the education - I did my masters at Gtown without blinking.  Not to say that individual students/professors/personalities don't play a big part in it.

Class sizes tend to be smaller, and the faculty is usually young but top-notch, or well established in their field and looking to get away from the academic grind of publish or perish.

I commuted for all but my senior year, and worked full time the whole time I was enrolled, so I didn't have a typical experience, but I keep in touch with a number of friends who lived on campus and they all loved it.

  • I went to UIC for two years and graduated with a BA in English...I hated it there.  Keep in mind, all I ever really took were English/Literature/Writing classes, as I had finished all my general education curriculum at Harper in Palatine beforehand.  I lived on campus both years, and thought it was an extreme waste of money.  Just my personal opinion, though.  I've heard good things about Elmhurst College.
