Hardwood floors finished in factory?

Hi there,

We are getting hardwod floors put in our house and I am concerned about the off gassing. They are going to be pre-engineered and finished in the factory. The wood is Hevea which is made from the rubber tree.

Since these are NOT finished in the house is off gassing as much a concern?

Thanks!

Re: Hardwood floors finished in factory?

  • The thing that would off-gas is not the wood, but the laquer/poly. Are they using a low or zero VOC finish? That would mean a water-based poly. If so, off-gassing is not much of a concern. If they are using an oil-based poly, you will deal with off-gassing. I would request water-based if that is an option. I suppose the stain is also a concern, but our floor are the natural wood color, so I haven't researched VOCs and stain.

ETA- Another thing that would off-gas would be the glue that holds together composite wood. I am guessing that does not apply to you, since composite wood could not be considered hardwood. But, it is worth asking about.
