WWYD -- $1000 for landscaping

MIL has decided to give me $1000 with a landscape designer she knows (her friend's son, currently between jobs) as a graduation present.  This is an amazing surprise and I'm totally blown away -- but we have to start next week and I don't even know what I want/need most.

I met with a landscape designer last year at the garden center but have only a basic site plan based on my knowledge of our property.  No professional site evaluation was done. We have a pretty big lot (1/3 acre) that is a mess for the most part.  Here's a few pics:

Option 1:  Front Yard - DH & I already planning on a total re-do this summer.  Remove bushes on left side, replace with red/yellow twig dogwoods.  Remove concrete walkway, use pavers & make it "curvy". Smaller lawn area with stone borders.  Small retaining wall in front w/ barberry bushes.

Option 2:  Expand back patio area (with pavers?)  Plant perennials of some kind along back of house where we just removed the gravel & ripped up landscape fabric.

Option 3: Clear out back area.  The far left side is apple trees (keeping) on a hill covered with periwinkle vines (that I hate).   One plum tree will stay with the rest of the thicket needing to be cleared out near the shed.  In the far back right corner is about 20 feet of misc bushes -- lilac, juniper, etc.  Planning on clearing most of that away but still having a barrier between us & neighbor.

Option 4:  ???

Re: WWYD -- $1000 for landscaping

  • I would get the front yard done.  It will give you more curb appeal.
  • One word of caution with regards to your front yard design ... be careful with a paver walkway ... yes its pretty and aethetically pleasing but they can be PAIN in the winter to shovel ... even if they are laid correctly and flat the grooves between them (grout lines for lack of a better term) tend to catch shovels and make it much more of a chore than one would think ...
  • I would expand the patio area.  I live in Denver too and we use our patio all the time!  It's so nice to have someplace to sit and grill outside.  When we moved in last year I didn't think we'd use it much, but we are always out there.  The only negative is that to really enjoy the patio you have to have some shade otherwise it gets too warm.
  • I would start with whichever area means the most to you and/or would give you the most enjoyment.
