AW - Solar Panels are Completely Installed!
They finally finished yesterday! Yay! We have 30 panels that will generate (at perfect conditions) 5.25kw/hour. Living in SoCal with so many sunny days a year and our roof facing in the perfect direction, I think we're going to do well! It still needs county and so cal edison approval but when they turned it on to test it yesterday at 5:15pm the meter was running backwards!
I'm so excited!!
Re: AW - Solar Panels are Completely Installed!
Do you feed energy back to the grid or does it just meet your needs?
Thats great! Good for you guys! A brilliant investment.
We're actually leasing them from a company called Solar City so everything from getting permits to the 4-day installation is included in our lease payment every month. Including our lease payment every month, they have estimated we'll save on average $100 month.
Unfortunately they're not taking care of 100% of our needs. But it will help a lot. Just yesterday afternoon we were feeding back into the grid during the 45 minute test they ran! So there will be times that we're making more than we're using.
Now if I could just magically get the county inspector and edison out here then we'll be done! :-)

The company has a $0 down and we're paying ~ $120/month for the lease which includes everything. It's a 15 year lease. A guy from the company came out and did a free consultation which took about 2 hours. They did the plans and we then had to show them to our neighbors for sign-off and then give it all to the HOA. They've taken care of the county permit (we don't live in the city) and So Cal Edison. Once we get the inspections done (So Cal Edison and the County) it can be turned on. I can't wait!
Very interesting! I will have to talk to my husband about this when I get back into town. We just moved into our house, so I'm not sure what our average utility bills will be. I'm sure it will be a lot in the summer. It couldn't hurt to at least get an estimate, right?
What happens if you decide to move within 15 years?

You only get all of the rebates if you purchase the panels. By leasing them, Solar City gets the rebates.
It's a free estimate so no, it can't hurt! :-)
I don't remember what they said about breaking the lease if we move. I don't remember it being anything bad otherwise we wouldn't have done it. I'll ask DH to let me know exactly what the terms are and get back to you. :-)
