Best place to get basic black dirt?
We are re-doing an area that's already landscaped out in front of a new home we bought. The prior homeowners didn't take care of this area, and it's on a slope, so a lot of the soil has washed away.
I need to replace tons of dirt to start my gardening here, so I'm looking for where I can buy lots of dirt, and cheap since we need so much.
Re: Best place to get basic black dirt?
I didn't think of this - I guess I was assuming I could go buy huge bags of it and bring it home myself, I didn't think to look into getting delivered. Thanks.
I suppose it depends on how much you need. You can buy topsoil/garden soil at regular home and garden centers (and I'd push supporting local stores rather than big chains!) but if you need a lot, getting it delivered (by the yard) would make more sense.
If its on a slope, how are you going to keep it from just washing off again?
Are you just trying to build up and improve the soil? I get composted manure free off Craigslist (need a truck!) to do that.
I haven't thought of how I'm going to keep it from washign down the slope - I'm actually going in to a local store tonight to talk to someone, and that was one of the things on my questions list - I'm very new to gardening so I don't know much about this! I want to improve the soil, but at the same time there's spots that need soil added, right now there's big holes where it's washed away. It's so eroded away i can't plant anything there. Ultimately, I'm trying to get it so that I can plant some basic shrubs/evergreens and perennials.
Slopes can be really difficult!
I would take pictures of it and take them with you to a good garden center near you. I'd ask your local board for advice on where to go. You're going to get a lot better advice from a real garden center than just going to Home Depot. And of course if you post pics here we can offer ideas too!
Thanks so much for your help - I'm excited to stop by the nursery tonight and talk to someone - I'll definitely bring pics.
