Weed/ planting/seeding help needed

We have 2 fairly large beds that are completely full of weeds.  Up until we both this house I've always been a container gardener.   I'm not sure what the old owners did with these bed but they are just weeds now.  We want to seed them with annuals this year since we aren't sure what we want to do with them long term.

It isn't feasible to hand weed these beds. Can we just till the beds, add the topsoil and seed or is there something else we should do?

 thanks.

  • I'd do a broad spectrum weed killer, give it a few days, then till and seed.

  • I'm antichemical, especially when its so unnecessary.

You could lay down weed barrier, more soil and then plant, or look into lasagna gardening/layer gardening.

till, smother everything with a layer of wet newspaper, make holes for annuals, plant annuals, cover with mulch.

  • HD now sells a line of nonchemical weed killers.  One is called Natria--made by Bayer---, but there are others.

I order grain vinegar and citric acid from garden-ville.com to kill weeds.  Works great, but the shipping is a bear.
