mirena experiences

Anyone use mirena for BC? Would you mind sharing your experiences? I took depo provera a long time ago and had AWFUL side effects (very moody, dizzy, decreased sex drive, weight gain). Mirena is also a progesterone based IUD, but apparently at a much lower level. I'm trying to see if others have had good or bad experiences.

thanks

Re: mirena experiences

  • Hey, I have been on the mirena since Janurary 2007 and I love it! I dont feel it or have issues with it at all.  My hormones are normal.. well as normal as they can be.  I really suggest this to all my friends and family that are looking for bc without the side effect of normal bc.

The only downfall.. sorry but I have to tell you.. is that after I had the mirena inserted. I had a light period for about 3 months of and on... (ex.. 1 week on, 1 week off, 2 weeks on.. etc..) However after the 3rd month I completly stopped having periods all together.  Each woman is different. But I love it and totally recommend it

  • I have had Mirena almost 2 yrs.  I cannot take the pill because the estrogen makes me crazy.  Mirena only has progesterone and I did have a few side effects the first 2 mos or so.

My side effects were:  some hair loss (I just noticed it was thinner), cramps, back/body aches, some spotting, bloating

I have my period maybe 3 times a year and it's very light when I do.  I still get cramps every month, but only for about a day (I never had cramps prior to Mirena).

I have not noticed a decrease in libido or moodiness.  Maybe some weight gain, but my weight fluctuates as it is so it's hard to tell if it was Mirena.

  • I have had it for 2 years. It is great. I had cramping for a few days and then intermittent spotting for 6 months. I have not had a period in 18 months it is great. I am done having kids, but I didn't want to have surgery to get my tubes tied.

  • I've had the mirena for a little over a year and I really like it.  I tried several different pills before but all gave me nausea, some more than others.  I still have occasional spotting.  I also still have periods, albeit much shorter and lighter, usually every 2 or 3 months.  The only thing I must bring up is it was very painful to insert.  I don't have any children, which made it more difficult (and painful), but once it was inserted and I was over the trauma, i have had no other complaints.
  • I had Mirena put in in 2007 and I had it removed in less than six months... the insertion caused me a great deal of discomfort and I felt hormonally out of balance afterwards.  I spotted constantly and felt like I always had my period...however I liked that I did not have to take a pill everyday...I recently spoke to my GYN about BC options and I think I may try the Mirena again after I have a child...My Dr said that they can be more comfortable for women who have had at least one child....good luck.
  • I've had mine for two years and I love it.

The insertion wasn't too bad.  Nothing more than uncomfortable for me.  I had bleeding and cramping for two weeks after.  That was the worst part for me.  Nothing terrible, though.

My periods were very irregular for the first 6 months.  I would have it for a week.  It would go away for two and then come back for 3 days.  I would get it again 5 days later and have it for 2 weeks.

After those 6 months, my periods got very light and eventually regulated.  I now get it for about a day or two every month and it is very light.  I can pretty much just get away with a panty liner.

I can't tell it is there durring sex.  I haven't had any cramping since the begining.  I have recomended it to many of my friends and they all love it as well.  I only had one friend who had issues and she shouldn't have had it anyway.  She was not an ideal candidate as she had never had kids.  He body began to reject the device and she required surgery to remove it and repair part of her uterus where it meets the cervix because of the beginings of a puncture.  The doctor that performed her surgery said that this rarely happens.  He said it is even more rare in women who have had a baby in the past.

  • I loved it. all for vain reasons of course. My boobs grew, my waist didn't (didn't cause weight gain like other bc), and my libido remained. I will get it reinserted after we have #3.

The procedure was very easy-just felt like a pap exam and the removal was even easier.

  • I've had a mirena in for a year and a half. I was debating between the copper IUD and the mirena and chose the mirena over the copper one because the copper one is supposed to increase flow (something I definitely do NOT need).

Insertion was fine, not painful at all. My ob/gyn told me to let her know if H was bothered by the strings poking him and she'd shorten the strings. He did complain of that and when I went in they said they wouldn't shorten them because it would complicate taking out the mirena later.

As for side effects, H has a whole other side to this but here's mine. First major side effect was I was suuuuper moody. For no reason and for long periods at a time. The moodiness was even worse when I was on my period(which my periods btw have not decreased at all). I went in to discuss my options for the moodiness with my dr and she pretty much said I could take it out or take anti-depressants. So I opted for the anti-depressants. The other issue I had was I was excited to lessen or get rid of my period and it is just the same just without cramps.

All in all, I have zero moodiness now, I just am gaining weight and have no sex drive cause of the anti-depressants. You win some you lose some :
