After the 20 wk/gender determination ultrasound, do you get another u/s before the baby is born?
Also, did any of you get 3D/4D u/s?If so, is it woth it?
Thanks!
E
Re: BR: ultrasound question
So if everything is fine, after the 20wk u/s, you won't see the baby until he/she is born? That's a long time!! :-P
Not sure what the regulations are in the US. I had the standard u/s for dating and then the anatomy one around 18 weeks. I only got one more since I went past my due date and they were monitoring fluid levels. Other than that, unless it's required I would say no.
I didn't get the 3D u/s done, as I felt it wasn't necessary. We have good friends that run a clinic and offered us a free one, but I didn't want it. Medically, the jury is still out on whether they are safe since more waves are sent to produce the image. I didn't want to take any uncessary risks for an "entertainment ultrasound". Secondly, I find it kinda creepy. I wanted to meet him when he was born.
HTH. How are you feeling? Show us some belly pics!!
I feel great. Thanks for asking :-). I just posted one on the weekly check-in post :-).
I had a 3D/4D ultrasound at 18 weeks and it was SO worth it. Then again, I didn't know we were signing up for one... it's just what they did at the clinic our doctor sent us to. My insurance co-pay was a bit high ($60), but we didn't care. The views were AMAZING. We also got pictures and video to take home with us on CD.
I had another one (regular images) in the OB's office at 32 weeks. I think she was just checking our progress, as there were no issues. Sorry to say, but after the 3D one, it was a disappointment for us as eager parents. We couldn't tell what was what. But at least the doctor got what she needed.
I then had another regular one at 42 weeks because I was overdue.
Very excited for you... and to know if we're team pink or team blue! Do you have any instincts about it?
I haven't had any problems with this pregnancy but I can't help but feel paranoid at times. I just thought that after the 20wk u/s, it will be a long time until delivery that is why I may consider getting a 3D/4D u/s around 30 wks. I am checking with my insurance if they cover part of it.
A lot of people have been guessing we'll have a girl. Of course, DH wants a boy. I personally think it will be a girl but who knows :-P. I don't really care. I just want a perfectly healthy LO :-).
Can you get the 3D one at 20 weeks? Since it was our "big" ultrasound where they did the measurements, it was covered. If it'd been elective, we'd have had to pay over $400!
Yup, that's what's happening for us. I actually got an opportunity to participate in a free study for 3D/4D u/s where I get to keep the vids and pics but I ended up declining because my OBG recommended that I did -not- get more u/s than what was medically needed and MH was uncomfortable with it as well...so the last time we saw the baby was at 20wks and the next time we'll see him is when he's born!
Hmm..good point. I'll call the place where we're having the u/s done and ask!! Thanks!!
Hey E,
I can't believe how far along you are already, exciting! We are going for the 3D ultrasound and I'm so looking forward to it. DH did not see the baby at all really during the 20 week ultrasound and it was so disappointing... they showed us the screen for a few seconds it seemed. At my follow up ultrasound to get better views of the heart (which turned out fine
) I saw the baby for a little bit and he touched his chin with his hand, so cute. I really would like DH to see the baby a bit more like I have. A few friends referred us to the 3D U/S office and I've read great reviews on it, etc. BTW, don't worry, once you start feeling the baby move a lot you'll feel more reassured, I know I do now that he's kicking me all the time
I love Hawaii!

I just called the radiology place where we are getting the u/s. They did say they have 3D/4D capabilities but don't do it unless the doctor doing the u/s thinks it's medically necessary. Boo! I'll call again tomorrow and ask another person lol.
Thanks Tara. I am looking forward to feeling the kicks! :-)
My doctor felt my belly and could tell if the baby was head down.
Yes.
standard of care is just 2 u/s....one at the beginning for "COP" - confirmation of PG...and then what we call the gender u/s but really it's an anatomy scan to make sure baby is developing normally....you'll only get other u/s if they need to follow up on something, do a growth scan, etc.
we didn't do a 3d/4d u/s and didn't regret it

Yeah, mine said she could tell by feeling the belly, and then also by the internal exam, so no more u/s needed.
yep, they should be able to tell what position the baby is in by feeling your belly (I never had an internal but that probably could help too...).
They can always order one if needed (like a follow up to the first one, or if you have decreased movement, they for some reason can't determine the position of the baby or need to monitor a breech baby, or like at the end I needed one to check amniotic fluid).
I did, but then mine was a special case - they had to have regular ultrasounds to make sure they were growing at the same rate and didn't get twin to twin transfusion syndrome.
Ben wanted to get the 3D/4D scan but we didn't end up doing it.
I had them every month and then every other week b/c of fibroids. But I think that is not usual. It totally depends on your doctor.
That said, the ultrasounds early on (12w and 20w) are the best ones because you can see your baby better. When the baby gets bigger, you can't see it all at once, only pieces, so it's a hand here and a spine there, not really the whole baby at once.
We did not get a 3D ultrasound b/c our techs didn't offer it.
You can pay a private firm to get a 3D ultrasound, but everything I've read discourages this. Doing it once might be OK. I think Renee did? Your call, either way.

I didn't, and the other women that went to my practice didn't unless there was an issue - high blood pressure, etc.
I didn't do the 3D/4D, b/c quite honestly, they creep me out a bit! I konw someone who paid for it and said it wasn't worth it to them though.
Thanks for all your insights!
I verified with my insurance and they cover 3D/4D u/s just like a 2D u/s as long as it is part of prenatal care. Since we'll have our level 2 u/s in 2.5 weeks and the facility has 3D/4D capabilities, I guess it wouldn't be a big deal if we ask the technician to switch the sonogram to 3D to take a sneak peek :-).
Cool! If it's covered, why not?
I thought it was incredibly amazing to see how developed and proportional our baby was even though he was just 6 inches long and half a pound. It was also fun to see his features developing -- we could already identify some things that looked like me and what looked like DH!
Lucky!
We had just two ultrasounds, one at the very beginning and at 20 weeks. It would have been nice to have another near the end but by that time, I was feeling the baby kick/move so much that I didn't need the reassurance of an ultrasound to know that he was growing and ok in there. [:)}
