NoVA ladies- advice on moving to the area

Hi ladies!

I usually post on the Bump (3rd tri), but I need your help. My husband received orders from the Navy to a new job in Arlington, starting in August. So we'll have to move in July. We're looking to move to the Arlington/Alexandria/Annandale/Springfield area. Any advice on these areas and finding a place? I've been looking on realtor.com and a few other sites so far. Our first baby is on the way (due in 3 weeks) and we have 1 small dog. We're only looking for a rental for now.

Of course we really won't even be able to head down to the area to look at anything because of the baby coming so soon, and I assume things go fast so I need to start finding a place! We'd love to rent a single family house, like we have right now, but a townhouse would be great too.

Thanks for any help you can give! It's going to be difficult doing all of this online/by phone... I'm sure the Navy will help, but it's good to hear your advice too.

Re: NoVA ladies- advice on moving to the area

  • Hi! I'd post this on the DC board, which is much more active and includes a lot of NoVa nesties.

Without knowing what you're looking for, it's hard to recommend anything...but in general, Annandale and Springfield are more suburban and farther from DC, and Arlington and Alexandria feel more urban (and are more expensive). I live in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria and love it--very dog- and baby-friendly! I much prefer Arlington and Alexandria (mainly because I see them as more unique and less like your average suburb elsewhere in the U.S.), but we definitely pay more to live here. We opted to buy a townhouse in a neighborhood we love where we can walk to tons of stuff rather than a bigger house farther out in the suburbs. Good luck!

  • Hello!  My husband and I live in Alexandria, and we are looking to move into a townhouse as well.  We are looking in the Springfield, LakeRidge, and Manassas areas.  I have found they are more affordable and have more space.  We are working with a realtor who is very helpful.

You will love this area!  There are lots of family oriented areas, and little towns like Norwich or Mystic.

    Good Luck!
