Anyone know how much hostas usually cost?

I'm assuming I can grow them in California. I know I've seen them in my Sunset gardening book, but I'm out of town right now so I haven't formally looked into this.

I have an area that is completely shaded by mature trees. I'd like to fill in the landscaping beneath that area. Any idea how much hostas usually run? Any other suggestions for filling in shady areas?

Re: Anyone know how much hostas usually cost?

  • hostas are fairly cheap and they spread
  • Too bad you are not in MI.  I have a bunch that I am planning on digging up and either moving to other spots or giving away.  The previous owners of the house LOVED hostas.
  • Hostas are relatively pricey here (or maybe I'm cheap?) at $16.  HD has them for much cheaper but I don't like that cultivar.

However, they do seem to grow fast and can be divided.

Have you tried Freecycle to see if anyone is dividing theirs?

  • My mom has a rule - never pay for hosta :)  You must have a neighbor or friend that will share some!
  • I live up in Seattle, and they sell for under $5 here.  I have also seen a bag of mixed wild flowers that are made to grow in the shade, and you can find that at Home Deopt or Lowes.
  • hostas are a great option.  we have a huge pine in our yard and our hosta come up, maintenance free, year after year.

  • It really depends on area, and what variety. I've heard some more rare ones can be very pricey!

I totally agree, get freebies! Post on CL?

I've only gotten them free but I left all mine at my old house. Sad Sad too because I had one that had peach in the variegated leaves, so pretty!

  • While on Craigslist, keep on eye out for divisions of Cast Iron Plants.  They also grown in the shade and are similar to hostas.
  • We bought about 15 for about $15 at Costco.  The bag had three different varieties.  The plants were bare root, but they are growing like crazy!  I've seen similar sized plants selling for $6-$10 dollars each.

    This!

If you don't have anyone around who is wanting to get rid of some, also watch farmers' markets or other 'plant sales'. I'm guessing the cost will somewhat depend on the size you want. I wouldn't worry about buying them 'big' because they grow easily and quickly (even here in MN).

Yep, never pay for a hosta!  I have given divisions to everyone I know and still have some left over lol

  • Does anyone know when to divide up my hostas?  I'd like to move some around, do I do it now or the fall?  Thanks.

  • Depends. If you are willing to plant an old school variety they can cost very little. My local Home Depot was shilling Frances Williams for $2 a quart, Sam's had bare root unnamed varieties for even less.

If you want the latest and greatest from WFF, they can run $25+ each. Hosta are sort of addictive.

Ditto this.  Unless you want the plain green ones, they aren't cheap here.  I have a bazillion though and can't give them away.  I'm eventually going to freecycle some.
