AZ continues to spiral into craziness

A bit off topic, but I was reading about Arizona's new ethnic studies law http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/05/12/arizona.ethnic.studies/index.html?hpt=T2

and was just floored. How can it be illegal to teach that being a minority means you are in the minority? Or that minorities are oppressed in U.S? Are these actually radical or surprising ideas?  It sounds like this law would apply to any minority, including LGBT studies.

Hey, this is the same state that recently banned human-animal hybrids.  Apparently, their legislature never lets facts get in the way of what it feels like doing.
  • If you lived there you would understand. This is about so much more than minorities and "racism." It's about the cartels and drug lords coming over our borders. Unfortunately there was a disconnect with law enforcement before. As a result, there has to be a more stringant law to try to rectify the whole situation. What would you suggest they do when the illegals continue to come over the borders despite the so-called laws that are in place now? It's about the safety of the people that live there. Do your research on more than just CNN.

I don't understand how banning ethnic studies classes in schools will impact drug enforcement or immigration. Did you read the article I linked to? I really struggle to see any explanation for the ethnic studies law, other than racism, fear and a misrepresentation of minority studies. It makes me sad.

I wasn't originally commenting on the immigration law, but since that seems to be your primary concern I'd like to mention that my wife and her family used to live in Arizona and she still has friends there. None of them support the new immigration policy. Like everywhere else, there is diversity of opinion in Arizona. I hope we can agree to disagree here too.
