For those who have taken a European cruise...
would you mind giving me some details? Cruise line, destinations, time of year, loved, hated, etc.
I might be able to convince DH to take one next year, as he is very overwhelmed at the idea of just touring around Europe on our own.
Thank you!~
Re: For those who have taken a European cruise...
IMO, a cruise is the best way to get your feet wet in Europe.
We did a 7 night Royal Caribbean Mediterranean cruise. Started in Barcelona, stopped in: Nice, France; Florence/Pisa, Italy, Rome, Italy; Naples, Italy, and Palermo (Sicily), Italy. It was wonderful! We bought all of our tours ahead through the cruiseline (best way since you are guaranteed safe travels to and from...some of the port tours are scary and rip offs). Most ports took about a 45 ride in, so doing it yourself was actually pricier than taking the tour since the cabs can be so expensive. We had a wonderful experience on the ship and with all the tours.
Our favorite part was that once on the boat, they took care of everything. Dinners, transportation everywhere (you travelled while sleeping and woke up in a new port. It was amazing that we didn't have to worry about train/plane delays, stress, etc). As first-time Euro travelers we also loved that the ship was an English speaking base for us, in case there was an emergency. Sure, there was always someone who spoke English in the cities that we could converse with (or I could get by with my limited French/Italian) but it was certainly a comfort.
The food was wonderful and we really enjoyed the activities on the ship. Everyone was very friendly. Additionally, because the Euro v. dollar sucks (and was even worse 2 years ago when we went), it helped save some $$ with everything on the boat being in dollars, including the accommodations. We calculated both out (staying in each city vs. cruise) and it did save us considerably since meals were costing us $150 for a cheeseburger and beer at Hard Rock Cafe in Dublin, Ireland when we went bc the rate sucked.
If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them!
Thanks GLL for the excellent review!!! So, did you fly into Barcelona and then fly home from Italy? I really don't like the idea of trans-atlantic cruising. I think it would make more sense to fly back and forth.
I LOOOOVED our cruise!
We went on Celebrity cruises in August 2008. Ours was a 10 day cruise starting in Rome, then to Messina Italy, Athens, Mykonos, Ephesus Turkey, Rhodes, Santorini, Naples, then back to Rome.
I lived in Europe and traveled around, but this was the BEST way to get a taste of Europe.
