Hydrangea plant froze...is it a lost cause?

I planted two hydrangea plants last week and it then froze a few days later overnight.  I'm new to this whole planting thing so I mistakenly did not cover them up.  Now one plant has a few brown leaves and the other one is much worse with almost all leaves brown and shriveled.  Will the plants survive or did I already kill them?  Is there anything I should do to help them along?

Re: Hydrangea plant froze...is it a lost cause?

  • It's too soon to tell if the plants will survive or not.

Give it at least a month.  If you don't see any new growth in that time, the plants are dead.

  • Oh that makes me so sad!  Here's hoping to some new growth!
  • keep your fingers crossed.  my wedding flowers were all hydrangea and my parents were nice enough to take one from their yard and put it in our yard so we're hoping for lots of blooms!

  • Just give it awhile.  I thought ours were surely dead after this winter but they all came back.

  • I never cover mine, have never even thought of it, and they've always been fine. Of course, mine are like 30+ years old, so that might factor. I'd just clip off the dead parts (within reason) and see how they do!

  • They'll probably survive, but they may not flower this year.  That happened to mine last year.  One late freeze and no blooms for us :(

  • Our hydrangea froze over the winter and it is back to normal now.  I imagine they will survive, but may not be the most beautiful plants in your garden this year.
