Finally got our rain barrel!

Of course, it's been raining for 2 days straight so we haven't been able to install it. Tongue Tied Oh the irony.  But I am looking forward to getting it in place.

DH wants to paint it, but I haven't any idea on what to do.  It's going behind-ish our garage at the end of a small bed, so it's only really visible from the backyard.  Any ideas? Here's a picture of the bed where it's going (you can see the downspout on the far right):

Re: Finally got our rain barrel!

  • Ooh I'm jealous! I really want one...or twenty (lol, hey, its Seattle!), but its just really not in my budget. And yes, I know, free water blah blah blah.

Paint it?? What's it made of? What color is it? What color would he paint it?

  • Our local Water & Sewage dept sells them for, like, $50.  So it's not fancy - it's plastic. Bright blue. So even painting it plain white would be an improvement.

    Holds 55 gallons though. Woot!

  • Rain barrel, I'm jealous!  But we haven't put in a real garden yet, so I don't have much to water.

Wow, bright blue!  I'd want to paint it too.  I'd guess that spray paint would be best for plastic.  I think some are made specifically for plastic?  Those obviously wouldn't be zero-VOC paints though.

ps. Your dogs are gorgeous.  I have a black standard.

  • Ooh $50!! Nice!! I haven't found any that are less than $100 ish.

What about planting some taller flowers around it to disguise it?

Well, we do have hollyhocks and phlox that grow right there.  Eventually the bed is going to wrap around along the east wall of the garage and there'll be a large evergreen, etc. to shield it more from the street.....

BTW, check local breweries.  My sister just bought a nice wooden barrel for $50-$60 from a local brewery that recycles their barrels for this purpose.  It's not pre-fit with a spigot or anything like that, but it's another possible option.

  • I think I would paint it plain to match the trim.

  • There is some type of spray paint you can use. I think its called Krylon by rustoleum (sp?)
  • I painted my blue one white with exterior primer and paint. It peels off very easily. I think AMZ's suggestion of spray paint for plastic is probably a better idea.

This is good to know...  The instructions on the page I linked to suggested a latex bonding primer first, then exterior paint (after cleaning and sanding it).  But if we just do a solid color, I think the spray paint would be what we'd pick.

However, here's some neat designs that other people have done:

  • We got one too and just set it up today!

I think it would be nice if you paint it a solid colour to match your house.
