W2 or pay stubs to prove prior employment?

So I posted this on my local board, but I wanted to get my fellow June09 nesties opinions as well.  Anyone had to provide this information for a background check company? What do I do if I no longer have a W2 or paystub from that company? This was 7 years ago and I only keep stubs up to 4 years...and the company is bankrupt so that doesn't help at all. :(

Re: W2 or pay stubs to prove prior employment?

  • I've never heard of that.  I could see a background check caring about criminal issues going back that far, but have never heard of it for employment.  Wouldn't the company have some sort of tax records?  Not sure how far back the IRS keeps stuff, but they may have it.  If you filed taxes with an accountant, maybe they keep a copy?

I really don't get why they are checking that out.

  • That seems a bit excessive to me! I'd tell the new company that you're unable to provide a W-2 dated that far in the past because of the reasons that you mentioned to us. If they press the issue, then I'd check with the IRS or your state's employement agency.
  • Agree with other ppl.  Is there anything attached to your copy of your tax returns?

  • I don't understand it either, but it is what it is.  I think I'm gonna contact the IRS to see if they could provide me with my taxes from those years.  What a PITB!

Did you do your own taxes or have someone prepare them?  If you had a professional do them, hopefully they kept your records. We have tax records back to 1981 here!

no unfortunately during the period of time they are asking my parents did my taxes. :(  My dad checked and was unable to find any paystubs or W2s. :(
