Anyone plant perennials on a slope?

What kind of plants do you have on your slope? We moved into a house that has a back sloping bed. It has junipers growing in punches all around but really nothing else. I've never tried to plant/grow anything on a slope as the grounds at our last house were level. I just don't want to plant a bunch of perennials and have them die. I've heard you can pretty much plant anything but I'm curious to hear what others have done and what extra care is needed. Thanks!!

Re: Anyone plant perennials on a slope?

  • Our front yard is on a 30 degree slope.

Currently we have a Scotch broom, some ornamental grasses, barberry, juniper, viburnum, and some trees.

We haven't had to do anything special. Our landscaper mulches about every 18 months, and that's about as exciting as it gets. He did put in a good drainage system though.

  • We have a ground cover (creeping jenny), stone crop, toadlilies, lavender (it's the only place I can get lavender to grow in my compacted clay soil!), liriope and some other random plants that I've been given.

It's a little hodge-podge-y looking now, but I'm experimenting with what can thrive there.

In short, you can def. plant anything as long as the light & soil requirements are met.

We have a slope on out front yard.  We have desert willow, penstemon, salvia, yucca, agave, prickly pear and cacti planted on teh slope.  But we also have a rock mulch.  So nothing moves, anyways.
  • Summer and Winter....beautiful small white flowers with a great green vine, they have doubled in size every year, simple and beautiful!
