I lurk on a few different boards here, and I frequently see posters writing about getting deliveries from couriers a few times a week. In my province or at least in my group of friends/acquaintances, it is a very rare occurence to receive a delivery from a courier.
So -- someone shops online, receives an item at their door, item doesn't fit, ships back via courier, new item comes to their door, repeat. I just cringe at all of the resources being wasted on this when someone could just get themselves to a store and get it done in one shot without using all of that fuel and packaging.
So, do you (or know people who) shop on-line and/or receive numerous deliveries? How do you think shopping online (say, with a company that just runs a warehouse) and shipping items directly to your door compares to having multiple storefronts with inventory available? Is one environmentally better than the other?
Re: Courier Deliveries/Online Shopping
If a company has stores then they have to ship their products from their warehouse to the store. There probably isn't too much difference between that and getting something shipped from the warehouse directly to your home (lets say you don't keep returning it).
Sometimes when you go into a store they don't have the product there and they have to ship it to you from the warehouse (say furniture for example).
I think the bigger issue isn't people shopping online but rather people returning items and getting new items sent to them.
