So, here we are again. Almost exactly three years since Katrina. The tension here is so heavy, it weighs on us like a fat man sitting on my chest. Hundreds of thousands of people are leaving the state, heading north to run from Gustav. Who, at this moment, is a Category 4 Hurricane. Which is pretty bad. New Orleans looks like a ghost town. Our grocery store shelves are empty of ice, bread, bottled water and other standard staples. Our gas stations are raising the price like every 10 minutes to take of advantage of the people gassing up to leave or just prepare for the worst. Well, the gas stations that are still open, anyway. Most of them have run out of gas.
If you've never experienced a hurricane, lucky you. We've been preparing for this for about 4 days now. It is going to hit us hard. We will definately lose power, the question is, how long will it be out. After Katrina, some people didn't have power for 4-6 weeks! We will have flooding. 6-12 inches of rain at one time. We will have fallen trees, breaking rooves of our homes. We will sit in this heat with no air conditioning, we will sit while our food goes bad in the fridge and freezer, we will sit while the water creeps up our front steps, we will sit while we wonder if our families are safe.
All I can be happy about is that our state and federal government is far better prepared this time! The National Guard is here... helping people to get out of New Orleans and other southern cities. They have already flown in hundreds of electricians from other states to help after the storm. 30,000 people, otherwise unable to leave, have been bused out of the state. It is sad that we had to learn the hard way. It is sad that so many had to die for them to realize this needs to be done. Those people paid a price so that we may learn this lesson. Please keep us in your thoughts and send safe energy our way.
