Mixer with new classmates

I start grad school in two weeks.  The summer start group is supposed to be small, just around 15-20 people, and I wanted to have everyone over that first week for a casual cookout for us to get to know each other.  I've heard that the summer group is mostly older, out-of-state students, so it's probably people like me who don't know anyone here.

Class ends at 11:30 on Fridays.

Would you do something on Friday, Saturday or Sunday?  Afternoon or evening?

The planner in me wants to pass around a sign up sheet for sides, desserts, etc, but I know that's dorky Embarrassed  Would you just say "bring a dish to share?"  I can't afford to feed 20 people on my student budget lol, so people really do need to bring things.

Re: Mixer with new classmates

  • Hi!  (I just went out with my DH for our first "date night" since February...so I'm a little tipsy) anyways - in my humble opinion DO IT.  There is nothing wrong with asking folks to bring something to a casual mixer. Have fun - I'm sure they will appreciate it.

     Cheers and Congratulations!

  • I agree with PP. If you are worried about what day, ask what is usually best for everyone. Then have them bring a dish to share, and it will be great.

As a side note- I wish I could do the same. My grad school is online though.
