does mulch cause more mosquitoes or no?

I have a play area for my child and about 2feet from this area I have a plant and a dirty area and I wanted to mulch it but I was told it would attract bugs and mosquitoes is this true and if so what should I use to beautify this area??
What did you use in your yard if not MULCH

Re: does mulch cause more mosquitoes or no?

  • Mosquito hatch their larvae in standing water - birdbaths, kiddie pools, constantly damp areas, etc.

I've never heard of mulch being a problem.

  • Sorry duplicate post.

  • I have never heard of mulch attracting bugs.  Like pp standing water is where mosquitoes lay their eggs.

    Another vote for standing water.

The most common mosquito species in N. America usually feed at dusk. During the day they need cool dark places to hide, so they take cover in foliage. If you set your hose nozzle on a fan spray pattern, and spray the bushes and flowers (about 3' high or less) during the day, you will see them fly out. They aren't there because of the mulch; they will do the same thing regardless of whther or not you mulch, or what type of mulch you use.

Mosquitos spend their whole lives within about 30' of where they were born, so if you're bothered by mosquitoes in your yard, look for standing water and spill it!

Maybe whoever told you that meant termites?  I've heard not to pile wood mulch right up next to wood siding on a house because it might attract termites, but I'm no expert on termites, so I'm not sure how true it is.  My parents told me they buy cedar mulch because termites won't eat cedar.  I have only concrete around the outside bottom of my house, so I haven't been worried enough about it to try to find out anything else about it.
