What did you want to be when you grew up and what do you actually do?
When I was little and all the way through high school I wanted to be a doctor. Got to college and hated the pre-med stuff and dropped the program. I always took psychology and art classes for electives and when it came down to it, I went into counseling and now I'm a school psych and I love it!

Re: Just wondering...
If you don't mind my asking, what district do you work for? I finished my PPS in school psych 2 years ago and am still not using it...I finished at the worst time to be looking for a job in education!
I always wanted to be a forensic psychologist. I wanted to work for the FBi. when I looked at it realistically, I changed my mind because I didn't want to put the time in being a regular FBI agent. And I don't want to see crime scenes every day. So then I turned to more clinical work.
I'm currently working on my MFT hours to get licensed, hopefully get a school psych position someday, but I don't even know anymore...
I saw that you put your email in another link. I'm going to email you because there may be some positions opening where I am and I can give you the scoop.
Growing up having almost my parents, aunt and uncle be in education, I wanted to be a teacher. One of my favorite games I use to play with my sister and cousins was school where I'd be teacher and I'd make them be the students (its one of the few games you can play when theres a 4 yr+ age difference between me and my cousins/sisters).
Once I went to HS I wanted to be a doctor. Part of my high school graduation's requirement was to spend the month of May of my senior, volunteering or doing something career oriented. I ended up working with my old pediatrician and hated it! I hated seeing babies sick and crying so I decided to switch my major to computer science.
I wanted to be a nurse. Turns out I can't handle blood. So in HS I switched plans and decided to be a Physical Therapist. Went and got my degree in Sports Medicine, then volunteered about 400 hours in various types of PT clinics... turns out it bored the heck out of me. So I went to work as an Exercise Physiologist for the State of California. From there my career has morphed- I work for the Parole Division interviewing inmates to determine their needs upon release, then we set them up with various community service providers to help them before the get out.
Since starting this job I went back to school, earned my MBA with a specialization in Healthcare Management. I am working a night job as a manager of a chiropractic office and I LOVE it... hopefully someday I'll be able to make that my bread and butter job- but for now it is just spare $$
I wanted to be a delivery room nurse. I thought it would be so much fun being around all those babies. But then reality struck and I couldn't handle the sight of blood and things so I changed my mind.
I am now an office manager/payroll admin. for a construction company. I enjoy my job and have lots of flexiblity with regards to my time and stuff. But what I really want to do is to have my own event planning business. Not necessarily weddings but showers, birthdays, etc.
I changed my mind so much. In hs, I thought about becoming a psychologist but then realized how much schooling it was I said no. Then I thought about doing a buisness degree. That lasted for a semester, then I wanted to be a lobbyist or something political in nature and I switched to a political science major. Then I decided I didn't want to live in Sacramento or DC so I switched to Art and to become an elementry art teacher, not knowing that here in CA they didn't have many positions if any at all. By this time I had known dh for awhile and didn't want to leave CA, so I was just going to do regular elementry ed. Then I talked more to my friend who was an elementry teacher and said nope not for me.
By that point I had graduated with the degree in Art and needed any job to pay the bills and massive student loans. I fell into the claims profession because my friend did it and I found a company that would hire me. I worked as claims adjuster and hated it, way to stressful and I don't have the personality for it. I still do claims, but I swtiched to the insured side. I work for a construction company handling their claims. Now I get to just report the claims to the insurance company. Way less stress! It's interesting, but I would much rather just be a SAHM. But at this point we can't afford it.
I really wanted to be an opthalmologist (eye surgeon) my whole life. Well I got to my second year in college and couldn't handle all the science. I absolutely hated it and knew I was wasting my time.
I'm now a full time photographer and have no regrets.
I went back and forth bet/ teacher and therapist. Just couldn't get into school to get my degree. Now I just have a job that pays the bills and works w/ our schedules so kids don't have to be in daycare.
When they are older we both plan on going back to school, still not sure what I want to do though
That's actually exactly what I do now
Oh really? where so you work now if you dont mind me asking. I work at Boys Republic in Chino Hills
I always wanted to be a writer. From the time I was really young, I was always writing stories and stuff. As I got older, I switched to poetry. I have a BA in English and almost an MA (I'm ABT). But I have never had a job as a writer. The closest I got was doing legal proofreading, which was incredibly boring. (Worst job ever.) I have had some publications, though, in some less-than-stellar magazines.
Anyway, right now I'm a SAHM. Been doing writing and photography on the side. I haven't figured out a career path for myself, but I do know that I don't do well as a 9-5er.
Great question!
Hmm, I am trying to think. I think I switched all the time when I was young but wanted to teach dance in middle school. I taught dance in high school for the city and stopped after 2 years for college. Then I thought I would be a physical therapist and started undergrad for that. When I transferred I realized that I didn't like the job and that it bored me and I really wanted to work with children.
I switched my major to Liberal Studies. When I was 20 I got a job as an instructional aide in a special ed classroom and fell in love. Now that I have taught I am drawn to the kiddos with behavior, coping, and attention needs. Though I am getting laid off, I am hoping to find another position where I can continue working with them. I guess I am lucky to have figured out what I love at a semi-young age.
How is your business going btw?!
I knew I wanted to be in the military since I was a kid. My idea was to go into the Air Force and retire after 20 years at the age of 38. That all changed and I ended up in the Marines and got out after 4 years.
Right now I am 2 classes away from getting a BA in Sociology. I first thought I wanted to go into the social work field but that's tough to get into. I've taken a few tests for the county but it's so so competitive out there right now. I wanted to be n some sort of helping field or agency but it's hard when you don't have experience.
For now I work at a construction company that deals with homeowner claims. We are the contractor's that are called out if there's damage of some sort to a home and we fix it. I am in the accounting dept which consists of just me. That means I pretty much do it all when it comes to the money with the exception of some things that the office manager handles. I decided I may as well stick to this field since I know it. I just interviewed with the sheriff's dept (2nd interview) for an accounting position.
