Using old dirt in planters...
Sorry, I have a really dumb question - I'm new to this!! LOL
I have a lot of planters that I plant flowers in. Is it okay to use
the leftover dirt from last summer in them? I never emptied them. I
was just going to keep the old dirt in them then put some fresh dirt on
top when planting. Is this okay?

Re: Using old dirt in planters...
Well, a lot depends on the quality of the dirt to begin with, what was grown in it, what you plan to grow in it..
but to make it simple, assuming it was decent dirt to begin with, I'd take 1/2 out and amend with compost and new potting soil, then use.
You need to mix (not just put on top) a minimum of 1/3 new dirt/potting mix into the old stuff. As pp said, 50% is better.
And the serious gardeners will get on you for the term "dirt." It's "soil."
I've been using the same planters for 3 years continuously. Haven't amended the soil much at all. Just sprinkled in a little new to make up for whatever the old plants took out with them.
I can hear serious gardeners gasping
I'm just growing annuals, though, and I really don't care if my plants get as big and lush as they could. I do water weekly with MiracleGro.

I will compost the soil in my small pots but there's no way I'm replacing all the soil in my large pots every year. I take out half of the old soil and put it in the compost pile. Then I refill the pot with new potting soil for my new plants.
