Ok my healthy eaters come in

DH and I already eat healthy. But, after seeing Food Inc I'm already making more changes.

DH didn't want to watch it with me at first, but some friends of ours saw it this weekend and now they've decided to try RAW foods, I'm not into that but now DH wants to watch it and we were talking about food choices last night and he has given me free reign to change some food choices for us.

So if you don't do much meat what are your big protein sources (and we won't do soy)

Do you do organic meat all the time? If so where is it cheapest?

Any other helpful hints?

What is your monthly food budget?

Re: Ok my healthy eaters come in

  • I'm probably going to do a blog post on this tonight with more detail...

In general, we don't purchase meat at all.  If we do, I try to find the free range, organic versions...I honestly can't remember the last time/place I purchased meat...

Our major protein sources are from beans and eggs - as well as nuts for snacks.

The biggest tip I can give is to think outside your normal food box.  BB has greatly expanded our food choices, which is wonderful.

We also don't "grocery" shop anymore, just pick up eggs/almond milk as we need them.  About once every six weeks I do a flour run and restock dry goods - flours, sugar, grains etc.  So I'm forced to get creative with what we have at home.  It's fun though and I never find myself in a panic because we don't have the right things on hand.  If we're craving cheesy things though, we will do a cheese run.

Our monthly food spending (not eating out) is probably less than $200.

  • DH is a real big meat eater, and so it has been a challenge to cut back.  I have had to get creative with my vegetarian recipes like black bean lasagna and others.  The nights we do have meat, we only have a small piece each and lots of veggies.  I make sure to purchase organic or free range meat, because after what I saw on Food Inc. I don't think I could ever look at chicken or beef the same.

Also, BB has been a huge help with cutting down my produce costs.  DH and I love fresh fruits and veggies, but it can all add up so quickly.

The past few months, I have really cut down on our food budget and we purchase everything in bulk now.  On average, we only spend $200 a month of groceries, and that is with DH and I taking lunches to work.
