can dogs get pink eye?

After having my dog at boarding all weekend and her sleeping pretty much all of yesterday when we had her home from being so busy at boarding, I am just now seeing her awake.  She has what I would call pink eye!  (gunky, red, swollen, etc.)  Can dogs have pink eye??  I called the vet right away and got an appointment for tomorrow but it looks so sore.  Poor thing.  I suppose she could have scratched it too... who knows.

Yes, they definitely can.  And they tend to get more or less the same medications as humans.  The only difference is that dogs typically get ointment (stays in longer), while humans get drops (interfere with vision less).
  • Yes, they definitely can.  Our dog had it over the winter.  I wish our vet had given us an ointment for it, that sounds a lot easier than what we had to go through to give our dog eye drops.  That was definitely an experience!! GL, hope your furbaby is okay!!
  • Yeeech.... Another good question: can you catch pink eye from dogs?

Most likely. You can get all sorts of stuff from dogs...

I was worried about that, so I didn't want our dog sleeping on our bed, or more specifically, our pillows like he likes to do.  But, DH didn't listen to me and let the dog sleep on the pillows.  Neither of us caught pinkeye.

    ...yet.

The last thing I want to do is be the voice of gloom and doom, but I would highly encourage you to wash your bedding immediately, and if your DH is insistent upon letting the dog sleep on your bed, I would find a new place for you to sleep (sofa, guest room) that's doggie free... just until the pink eye is passed.  If your husband wants to swim in pink eye germs, that's fine, but you don't have to.

  • I was worried about this too - so I've been compulsively washing my hands.  :-P  We let Lucy on our bed for snuggle time before bed but she's been sent to the foot of the bed and everything is getting washed tonight.  I got pink eye 2 years ago from what I think was a chance encounter at the Denver Airport since I didn't know a soul who had it.  I couldn't go to work because I was contagious but felt fine.  I caught it so early that my eye barely turned color and it stayed in just the one eye.  Not fun though.

He had it several months ago, I believe it was back in December or January.  Yes, we did was all our bedding...repeatedly until the dog was over the pink eye! :)

  • And its officially pink eye.  And we got ointment for it too.  Poor thing, it is getting more irritated now because her eyelid is swollen and her eye lashes are rubbing on her eye.  *sigh*  between this and her darn ear infections, I feel like I have a toddler on my hands!  :)  Good thing she's cute and worth it.  Stick out tongue
  • Awww, poor puppy.  :(  I hope she feels better!

I don't know that I've ever seen a pic of her?  Do you have one online?

  • I've got some older ones - apparently I haven't updated shutterfly lately!  :)
