Grass help

So we just closed on our house today (YAY!), so now the work begins.  We have St. Augustine grass and there are some patches that look just flat out dead.  Does anyone have any advice?  We already bought some weed and feed and someone else recommended we get some turf builder and try that too.  Any other thoughts?  TIA!

Re: Grass help

  • Your lawn will benefit from aerating, and ironite will make the grass really green.
  • Nitrogen really helps too.  Depending on how dead it is, you may need to pull up the dead area and plant a few pieces.

If you take a piece of your grass/soil to a local nursery they can usually tell you exactly what needs to be done.  Hopefully it's not bugs.

  • Get a free analysis from Real Green or some other good company. It could be take all patch or brown patch.  What does the dead piece look like?

It looks like take all patch. First thing you need to do is get a lawn service out there at least to give you an official diagnosis.   I think it is take all patch.

You need to be careful of what you apply as not everything is ok for St. Augustine.  You need to get the weeds pulled and if it is take all patch, you need to put down peat moss for 30 days and then replant the grass.

Good luck!!  With those trees though it should be fairly easy to bring back!!

Oh, and watering.  You will want to water deeply and then wait until it turns a purple haze in the evening and not be refreshed by the morning dew and water again. This will teach it to grow deeep and eventually you will end up watering less. GL!
