Gardening Stupid: After planting seeds...

How long should I wait before I put down the mulch?

Don't laugh, I've never planted seeds before! LOL

Re: Gardening Stupid: After planting seeds...

  • I'm gonna take a stab, but I'm interested to hear others' answers.

I wouldn't mulch because you'll affect germination.  Seeds are supposed to be a certain depth underground, and if you mulch, they'll be too deep.

It's never crossed my mind to sow seeds for an ornamental (vs veggies - and I assume you're talking about ornamentals because you don't mulch veggies) directly in the bed - I've always read about starting them indoors in baby pots.

  • I mulch my veggies.  Keeps weeding at a minimum, helps the soil retain moisture, etc.

Anywho, I would mulch after they get their first set of true leaves.  I agree that mulching right after planting might cause some issues.

  • We're mulching our veggies as well (haven't gotten to it just yet) - and it was a recommended technique on the gardening blogs I've been following and in some books I got at the library. We've got a container garden, so it's a bit different as far as watering/feeding needs, but I don't know why mulching wouldn't help ground planted veggies as well.

I mulch veggies and ornamentals that grew from seed after I get the first true leaves. For seedlings I transplanted, I mulch as soon as I transplant.

Ok, real farmers don't mulch veggies :)

LOL, not to be argumentative, but my CSA farmer did mulch some of his crops...

I have never heard of mulching veggies and I have lived on a farm for years. I guess it is possible, but I would be careful that it doesnt pull some of the moisture away from your plants. Might keep weeds down, but again, I wouldnt prefer to use it. I use straight fertilizer from our animals (cow, chicken and horse). We usually have great success with that. If you ever need a garden boost, this is a great thing to do prior to tilling the garden. Most local farms will just give the stuff to you if you dont have access... usually just need an old garbage can or two to use for it!

Laying down composted manure is essentially mulching.

There's a difference in scale between a large agricltural business (famoly farm or big agribussiness) and a backyard gardener.  My Dad never mulched veggies on our 1 acre farm growing up.  Then he moved to the desert Southwest and mulched all his veggie beds.  Even a lot of commercial farms out here mulch. It conserves water in this environment.
