Fruit Tree/4 year wedding anniversary present
I am wanting to get a fruit tree as a gift to celebrate our 4 year anniversary. I am wondering what would be the best option. I know some fruit trees you need to have more than 1 to pollinate or whatever. I am only wanting to get one, preferrably under $100. Is this possible? Which tree? Thanks. We live in northern va if that matters.
Re: Fruit Tree/4 year wedding anniversary present
Not a tree, but what about blueberry bushes? You'd need 2 but they'd take up less space than a fruit tree, be under 100, grow well in this area and give you fruit faster.
Just make sure you net them otherwise the birds get all the berries.
Many types of sour cherry self pollinate and there are some newer hybrid trees that have two varieties of fruit on one trunk (I have no idea how well those work.)
Depending on what size of tree you want a 100 dollar budget is fine. We have had great luck finding small -4 foot- fruit trees for WELL under 100 dollars.
There are a lot of self-pollinating options, but I don't really know what grows in your area. I'd check out a few good nurseries around you for options, and then research those more. I think you are probably in zone 6.
This was an interesting article and said you can grow peaches... I would love to grow peaches!! My area isn't hot enough for them. Most peaches are self-pollinating. There are also a lot of great plum and apricot varieties.
You should be able to grow Pawpaw, Peach, Plum, Nectarine, and Persimmon. Also fig, but only Brown Turkey fig (not Celeste fig). You could grow Pomegranate, but you would only get the beautiful red-orange flowers (no fruit).
I said "should" because I'm kind of iffy as to what will survive in zone 6, but all those I listed grow well in 7. And double check the Fig as well... they're not extremely hardy, but the Turkey fig is the hardiest as far as I know.
In Richmond, VA they sell for $35-$45 at about 6' tall.
