Any experiences with Aetna?

I've had Blue Cross my whole life but my company is thinking about switching to Atena.  Have you had any good or bad experiences with Aetna?

Re: Any experiences with Aetna?

  • I've actually had a very easy time with them!   I don't have anything bad to say on it - they seem to be very responsive, and send updates after every time I use my insurance.   I don't get sick or use it very often, though, so that is one thing to keep in mind.

I did however just have a bike wreck a few months back, and had to invoke my chiropractic piece of it.. it was super easy. I just wish I had more sessions.:)

  • I had issues with them when I had them, I was so happy when the company switched to BCBS.
  • I have Aetna.  It's ok.  I haven't had any problems with them, but I haven't really had more than regular check-ups and prescriptions so far.  I'm on their high-deductible plan this year since it was cheaper and came with an HSA but I'm going back to the lower-deductible/higher premium POS II plan in a few months at the next enrollment period because we're going to TTC soon and maternity costs are less overall with the better plan.

  • We have Aetna.  I also had it a few years ago with a different company.

Its fine.  I've had several different insurance companies...Aetna, BCBS, United Healthcare, Cherokee...and honestly, I've never noticed a difference between any of them.  Coverages have changed, but that's depends on the plan your company chooses.  Not the insurance company itself.

  • Been happy with Aetna. Getting clarification on our coverage was kind of a pain since ther person I spoke with wasn't a native English speaker...and the responses were kind of scripted, but I expect that with any insurance company.

After I was in the hospital for preterm labor, I got regular calls from an Aetna nurse to check in on me. I thought that was nice. Obviously they were making sure I was educated enough about my pregnancy so that we minimized the risk of disaster, but I appreciated the human touch.

  • We have Aetna insurance through DH's company.  I beleive we have the Open Access Select.  So far so good.

  • I have Aetna. My copay when I went to the gyno was $0 which was nice. I haven't really had any other doctor visits since I've been on it.
  • I have had Aetna several times with job changes, and had Aetna as my carrier in HS/college under my parents plans.

For the most part - no issues.  I did have 2 issues with them in the past (one in HS, one in college) that we had to raise serious cain in order to get them to cover.

The first was an oral surgery which they viewed as cosmetic, but my doctors did not.  They ended up making my dr so mad he had a lawyer send a certified statement to Aetna.  That did the trick and it was covered.

The second was when I was in college - I was on a "roaming" plan b/c there were no recommended primary care providers in my area, and I got really sick.  They wouldn't cover my medical bills at first b/c i didnt go to a primary care provider. I ended up having my dad call them and straighten it out.  PITA.  Took weeks to get resolved.

My company plans were pretty good on these plans - and most of my appts/coverage seem to go through pretty transparently.  No problems with them since college (which was awhile ago)!
