Re: Intro to CAFOs

  • This is one of my biggest issues with CAFOs. It really ticks me off that people believe these meats are cheaper, when these massive, multiBillion dollar companies make huge profits by dumping ridiculous amounts of waste onto OUR land, and OUR water. WE end up paying for it, in taxpayer funded cleanup, toxic land and water, loss of waterlife, loss of jobs, and more.

It absolutely blows my mind that we allow this. I couldn't just let MY personal waste run off into the land and waterways, and I'm just one person, not 50,000 hogs!

I'm really sick of how much influence these businesses have on our governments.

  • Oh, don't forget how companies like Smithfield got all pissy about H1N1 being called the Swine Flu because it gave them a bad name.  Confused

I hate, hate, hate CAFOs.  This picture made me so sad!

How can people think it's acceptable to treat animals like this?  Just seeing those sticky uppy ears on those two pigs looking right at the camera breaks my heart.  I realize I'm projecting human (or dog) emotions on them, but they just look happy.  Their ears are just like Nandi's when she's going BSC.

    It makes me sick.  Crying

Ding ding ding!  I totally agree.  More financial reasons why small mom and pop farms are better for us all than big agribusiness.

I remember someone posted a website that shows you where you can buy local meat and produce. Does anyone have the site?

    I believe it was eatwild.org

    EDIT: it's eatwild.com not .org

I completely agree, well said.  To respond to OP, "too much poop" is the sad, sad truth about CAFOs that no one ever thinks about.  That burger from McDonald's was ankle deep in its own poop it's whole life, and we wonder why we're getting outbreaks of E.coli on the news all the time.  Our entire food production system is covered in poop, including the farmland, waterways, and food itself.  Manure is a great fertilizer when applied properly.  As the article said, farmers are forced to put more poop onto their fields than the fields can hold, because the CAFO produces too.much.poop.  These poop-covered fields are what the grocery store produce and processed foods are being grown in.  Then that corn is fed to CAFOs, bring us full circle.  It's a great system, eh? Ick!

As the article said, "Meat is not murder. Meat is manufacturing."
