Lions, Tigers, Foxes, Bunnies, and Chipmunks Oh MY!

In follow up to Squeesh's slightly more terrifying post from earlier this week (it doesn't sound like many on this board enjoy snakes), I figured I would follow up with some lighter, fluffier tales of "what I saw in my yard last night."

I went to plant some more seeds in the garden and as I walk down the path, I notice a baby bunny munching on some lettuce it found in our compost pile.  It let me get pretty close to him--but he eventually hopped away to his unknown rabbit hole.

About 20 minutes later, as I'm turning over some soil for more seeds, I hear and see a shadow running through an upper part of the garden and think something spooked my cat (who had previously been sound asleep on the hood of my car).  I realize once it makes a turn around the garden (it's a fenced in garden) that it's not my Shadow--that it's a little fox!!  He ran through the garden with intent--he too was headed straight for the compost pile!  I stood really still to see if he would notice (or care) I was there, and he definitely looked straight at me.  But he kept on chewing.  It was kind of funny/cute/scary all at the same time, because I wasn't sure if I was safe (couldn't remember if foxes are aggressive), then in awe, then it was cute ('cause I could hear him munching!!).

Finally, I go back upstairs because it was just too dark to see anything at this point, and somehow a chipmunk found his way into our sunroom.  Needless to say, Shadow (that had woken up by this point and come inside) attacked the poor lost chippy.  We had to close him out of the room while DH and I pushed the chippy out of the room, and onto the deck he must have entered by.

When we bought our house, one of the descriptions was "Country life in the heart of the city" and they weren't kidding!!

  • Your story is WAY much cuter than mine!!!!!  I long for the day of Bunnies and Chipmunks.  But how cool that was to see a fox so up close.  Look lady I just want your compost - keep diggin.

  • This story makes me think that you are Snow White and you can charm all the animals!

  • Thats too cute! I was working in our garage this morning, which has been taken over by gardening stuff and there was an ity bity frog (like the size of a pencil eraser) and DH and I both 'Awwwed' at the same time :o)

Bunnies are adorable along with chippys. I'm not sure about the safety factor with foxes, but they too are cute!

  • We also found a frog the other night--he was IN our outside table umbrella.

Grr. That was the only one I had a picture of, and I can't figure out how to post it.  Grr.

Yes, I think there's a reason I felt the need to volunteer for the animal shelter.

  • I can handle bunnies and chipmunks. I would be a bit surprised to see a fox though.
