S/O book Recommendation

I want to read a book about the food industry so I can make more informed decisions about what I buy. I had a feeling that you would be able to point me in the right direction. I want something along the lines of Food Inc, but in a book because movies like that tend to overwhelm me.

Also any books that inspired, or helped you become more eco- friendly, food related or otherwise would be great. I am really feeling like it's time to get informed.

Any recommendations would be great. Thank You!

Re: S/O book Recommendation

  • I found What To Eat by Marion Nestle to be super informative and really helpful in making good food decisions. Her book is extensive and takes you aisle by aisle through the grocery store.

    HTH!

  • Ditto What to Eat.

    Michael Pollan's books are good.

Thank You! I actually started watching Food Inc right after I posted this because I decided being overwhelmed was not a good reason not to watch it. I'm looking forward to reading these.

  • I am just starting to read up but I just read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, Omnivore's Dilemma, and In Defense of Food and I have enjoyed every single one.  Thanks to the advice of you awesome ladies, I read them in that order and it was perfect.  These were GREAT introduction books about our food system.

And I just wrote down all of the above books...thanks!

  • I have read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, and I found it to be so informative and eye-opening.  And because it was written as a memoir, more or less, it wasn't as overwhelming as an all information book could be.  I think it's a perfect introduction to the topic!

Ditto these three books, I LOVED THEM.  Animal, Vegetable, Miracle has a permanent place on my bedside table, it's my go-to great book.  Informative, funny, plus great recipes, it's the best book ever.  I learned so much from Omnivore's Dilemma, it's a great journey of three meals:  McDonald's, eating from a family farm, and hunting your own dinner.  In Defense of Food is a great follow-up to OD, it goes more in depth on how Americans don't eat real food anymore, and how we can get back to that.  Michael Pollan's latest book Food Rules is short and oh so cute.  It's a series of food rules with short explanations.  DH and I have taken to quoting them at opportune times.  "If it's a plant, eat it, if it was made in a plant, don't."

  • I was overwhelmed by What to Eat.  I loved Omnivore's Dilemma and would probably pick that over In Defense of Food, although that one was great too.  I am reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and enjoying that a lot too.
