Anchorage & Seward travel recommendations?

We're heading to Alaska this Saturday for a week.  A friend of mine is getting married at the Alyeska Resort.  We'll also be spending a few days in Anchorage and a few days in Seward.

With exams and graduation I was a little late in looking into/booking activities and was wondering if anyone on here had any recommendations?

We'll definitely be going on hikes and we love the outdoors.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Anchorage & Seward travel recommendations?

  •  Girdwood:

Behind the Alyeska hotel there is a beautiful cross-country hike, 5 miles round trip (you could make it into 10+ miles but I never do) called Winner Creek (aka Glacier Gorge). I highly recommend!

Also, you can ride the tram to the top of the mountain in the same general area.

Chair 5 Restaurant in Girdwood has awesome pizza.

The Bake Shop in Girdwood is great for lunch or breakfast.

    Anchorage:

    Hike Flattop

Moose's Tooth (or Bear's Tooth) - amazing pizza and beer

Glacier Brewhouse - my favorite restaurant, downtown, seafood, beer, etc.

Orso's - sister restaurant of the above restaurant, great Italian food

Saturday Market - fun market downtown on Saturdays

Thunderbird Falls - about 30 minutes north of Anchorage (opposite direction from Girdwood/Seward), easy and quick cross-country hike to a pretty waterfall

    Humpy's - Bar/restaurant downtown

Kobuk Coffee Co - I used to work here, it's the oldest building in Anchorage and now a gift, baked goods, candies, teas, etc. store and is downtown

Alaska Wildberry Products - Little touristy shop in midtown Anchorage area with yummy chocolates and jams

Sourdough Mining Company - kind of overpriced, but a fun restaurant across the street from AK Wildberry and has a great Sunday brunch

Simon & Seaforts - pricey restaurant downtown but awesome for drinks and appetizers

    Seward:

    Kenai Fjords Tour

    AK Sealife Center

    Exit Glacier Hike

Have fun...I love Alaska, it definitely has my heart! ;) We're visiting next month for the first time in two years; we moved to MD two and a half years ago.

  • Thank you so much!  I was worried no one would respond.  My friend is stationed up there and she mailed us some brochures, but she hasn't actually been that many places yet because she and her FI were deployed soon after she arrived there.

I booked a small Kenai Fjords Tour today with the Alaska Saltwater Lodge group.  It's only up to 15 people per tour, which seems really cool.

We're thinking of checking out the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in addition to the AK Sealife Center.  Have you heard anything about it?

Have fun when you visit next month!  We're looking forward to it but it is hard to get used to the high prices after last year's vacation to Costa Rica, where we went white-water rafting, zip-lining, kayaking, etc...and including our acommodation and food it was still $2k for the two of us for a week.  =p

  • I know, AK makes a boat-load off their tourists. I knew it was expensive to live there, but it's pretty comparable to where we're at now in MD....actually, MD has a higher COL overall, I think. But booking a vacation for the first time that included flights, tourist activities, car rental, accomodations, etc. I was blown away!

I might be mixing up two different places, but if the AK Wildlife Conservation Center is outside Anchorage, maybe on the Seward Hwy on the way to Girdwood, I think I've been there. They have bears, moose, caribou, etc. in fenced in areas that need some sort of help while they're there. It's cool. There might be another one, and I'm sure that's good too. I've actually never visited the AK Sealife Center, I kept putting ot off when I lived there, but I heard it's awesome.

All of the Kenai Fjords Tours are awesome. We used to go on field trips as a kid and take family or friends when they came up, and we're doing another one in June. A warning though - they seem to be hit or miss. You either see all of the wildlife, or none at all. Either way, the scenery is beautiful.

I think I have some AK pictures in my bio, if you're interested. Enjoy your trip!

  • The AK Sealife Center is pretty cool. I think its a little expensive for non-residents. When we went, I believe it was $25 for ak resident. I think it was worth it. You can touch starfish and and sea urchin. Theres a room where they have puffins and other birds...pretty crazy in there. You should check out the docks that are close by. If you're into fishing, I think King Salmon will be running. A 3 day pass for non-resident is $35. I've lived here for a year and a half, so i'm trying to find things to do. Thanks AK, I wasn't aware of some of those places. I love brewhouse...primerib quesadillas...amazing. Brendonandalana...I thought your name sounded familar, then I saw ur siggy pic.I post on the pet board as well. Hope you enjoy your time up here. Its really nice. I hope you don't mind traffic, because its construction season.
