Smoking in restaurant vent

We went to a great restaurant in Hollywood over the weekend while visiting my sister. It's called Home and is on sunset. We were sitting out on their great patio waiting for our food to come out, then I noticed the guy on the table next to me pulls out a cigarette and asks the bus boy if he could smoke. I guess the bus boy nodded yes and then this guy and 2 other people on the table lit up. Now the restaurant was totally packed, and my boys were sitting directly next to these people, and there was another baby another table across from us. I quickly grabbed our stuff and moved inside. I was totally surprised to see people smoke, my sister said you are allowed to smoke outside, but I couldn't believe people would be so inconsiderate to other diners! My sister acted like it was no big deal and she sees it all the time. Even if the boys were not with me I would have been pissed off. I can't stand the smell of smoke, and it would have totally put me off my food. My dad is a smoker, and he would never do something like that. He even said he can't stand the smell of people smoking while he eats!

It was a shame, because the food was really great, but I would not go back. Does this bug anyone else? I think my sister thought I was overreacting, but it really pissed me off !

Re: Smoking in restaurant vent

  • I would have done the same thing you did with or without my daughter.  I am an ex-smoker (its been years since I have had one) and even when I did smoke it was never around people who were eating and especially never around children.  I had a similar situation happen to me at the Greek Festival this year.  An elderly couple sat down in some empty chairs at a table my family was in and the guy pulled out a cigarette.  I asked him not to smoke around my daughter and he did get up and walk away to smoke.  I don't understand where people's heads are sometimes.
  • You were not overreacting! I can't tell you how many times that has ?happened to us while dining outside on State Street. People will literally stand right next to our table & blow smoke right next to Marley. Better yet - the wind direction changes & it blows right into her face. I dislike smokers, but I especially hate rude smokers.
  • doesn't really bother me if the person is outside. ?however, if it were me i wouldn't smoke with kids around. ?that seems a bit rude.
  • I can't stand it either.  I hate going to Las Vegas because of smokers.  Our stupid next door neighbors like to go outside at night and smoke on their patio and it blows right up into our room.  It sucks on nice summer nights when having the windows open is so nice at night. Sad
  • I would have done the SAME as you!  I'd maybe consider going back, but sitting inside.  But I still hate smokers, especially around food, other people and with kids around.  If you smoke...go do it away from other people!  Or better yet, by yourself.
  • I suppose if smoking allowed on the patio, they are free to smoke. I would just move. I'm glad more places are banning smoking though b/c I can't stand it either.

Ever hang out in Koreatown? People smoke indoors even when there are big signs that say "no smoking".

When I went to Thailand, there were Europeans chain smoking next to us, we would've moved except the restaurant was packed. We just gave them dirty looks the whole time hoping they'd get a hint. I could understand a smoke before or after dinner, but chain smoking the whole time you're at dinner, come on!
