Is everyone ready for Hanna?

Just wanted to make sure we are all prepared if Hanna makes her way up here. Let's pray that she doesn't strengthen again, even tho she is expected to. This will be my first tropical storm/hurricane, and boy am I nervous!

What are you doing to prepare?

Re: Is everyone ready for Hanna?

  • We are about 60 miles from Myrtle Beach so we will more than likely get rain and wind from Hanna no matter where she makes landfall.  I have been collecting water in milk jugs for a few months now.  That is something my mom always did when I was growing up and I just started doing it too.  I probably won't do anything else until we know for sure where the hurricane will go.  And even then, I will get some canned soups and bread to hold us for a few days.  My mom has a basement so if it gets too bad, we will wait out the storm at her house.

I remember the aftermath of Hugo in '89.  We were without power for about 2 days.  I was 5 and remember taking a bath in a huge pot on the back porch.  I hope we don't have anything like that again.

  • We're in the upstate so we don't really need to prepare, but all you Coastal Nesties keep an eye on things, and come see us if need be!
  • I'm in Greenville and we haven't done anything... from the PP it sounds like we're ok, but any upstate nesties please let me know if there is something we should be doing to prepare!

If anyone needs to evacuate and needs a place to go for a day or two, I would be willing to help you out with a room if you want to come to Greenville/Simpsonville.

  • Ditto last several posts--I don't think we're in for much more than some nasty rain up here in Greenville, but by all means holler if you need anything!
  • We are right outside Columbia and haven't done anything and probably won't until we know for sure. If anything we will stock up on batteries and canned foods. All of our parents live around here too, so we have plenty of back up if need be. Right now my aunt, uncle, cousin and their 3 dogs are here with us becuase they just evacuated from Gustav. The live in Morgan City, La which I know you have all seen on the news. They can't get back until probably this weekend because there is no power, water, or sewage. Luckily no damage on their house. We are just taking it one day at a time with all these hurricanes!!! With family in FL, LA and here there is no other way to do it!!
  • Glad to hear everyone is ok Nbrockwell. It was looking pretty nasty over there in LA.

Glad to hear most of you are upstate. Sounds like everyone will be prepared, and really thats all you can do.

  • Best thing you can do is get out of the way.  Normally we don't do anything until we have a positive of when and where it is going to hit.  The further south it hits the less likely that the midlands and upstate will get anything more than high winds and heavy rains.  Just make sure that you have what ever you need in case the power goes out.  Bottled water, foods that you don't have to cook, a radio with batteries, flash light... etc...

I really don't think Hanna is going to be that big of deal for SC.  However, Hugo is embedded in my brain and I fully expect that we will see action this year.  We are due.

  • Hey Wendy thanks for the post!  Could you give me a suggested list of things you get for your "hurricane kit/Tropical storm kit"

I'm thinking like, stuff for PB&J sandwiches, water and some batteries?

  • I don't expect much here in the upstate than rain and storms...

I just hope it doesn't bring flooding and tornadoes up here. I would be fine without those!!

I am just going to make sure we have some can food, clean water, flashlights, batteries and candles.... just in case our power goes out from any storms, also incase we flood some (we at saluda river /dam) so just in case we can't leave we will have the canned foods. I don't expect it to get THAT BAD here----but ya never know!

  • I don't think we are going to have a problem, just lots of rain. *crosses fingers*

I was here for Hugo and moved to Homestead, Florida (2 hours south of Miami) JUST in time for Hurricane Andrew. If you think Hugo was bad, whew...

I don't want to go through any of it again. It's amazing how my parents made it seem like everything was just fine, when your whole world had fallen apart. I would be devasted if we left and came home to basically no home, like we did after Andrew.

Like Wendy said, I think we are due. I hate to say that, but it's been a LONG time. I'm sure we'll all be fine though!
