Loss gift advice needed, please help

I am from the Pregnant After a Loss board. One of the moms on our board just gave birth to her first child but unfortunately his airway was formed incorrectly and the baby boy has already passed. We want to send some flowers that could be planted and come back each year in his memory. I am not that great with these things but was hoping you all would have some ideas of bulbs/flowers that could be shipped maybe by ftd.com? They live in Des Moines, Iowa to give you an idea of climate. I just want to make sure we pick something that comes back yearly and will be hearty. Thank you in advance!

  • Oh that's so sad, and so thoughtful of you.

What about asking on the Iowa board? I'm not that familiar with that zone, and I am not really a bulb person. I do like tulips, but not sure how they do there.

  • Don't do tulips; we're only about an hour from Des Moines and tulips are best planted as annuals here--they come back, but sparsely and with few flowers. If you want a good return-crop you have to pull them, dry them and replant in the fall with cages. It's a pain.

I would recommend an heirloom variety of Hydrangea, like the Oak Leaf Hydrangea, Forsythia which are very, very easy to grow here and bloom profusely, dwarf Lavendar (we like the Machurian Lilac 'Miss Kim' which is very hardy here), or Bearded Irises which do beautifully here in full sun and bloom profusely with little to no care at all.

  • I'm not sure how big oakleaf hydrangea gets in Iowa, but down in GA it gets HUGE. It's a beautiful plant that has large white bloom heads and great fall color, but if you're not sure how much space she has, I'd err on the side of a smaller plant. Bearded Iris can really be beautiful and will be a relatively care-free plant.
