arm and hammer question

So recently I have decided to stop using arm and hammer laundry detergent because PETA lists them as a company that tests on animals.  In looking for an alternative though I realized that most home laundry detergent recipes (as well as all environmentally friendly household homemade cleaning recomendations) use arm and hammer baking soda.  I am confused on why arm and hammer baking soda (which is the only company that makes baking soda from what I can tell) is used in everything green but still makes a product that tests on animals when it comes to the detergent? sorry if this is a bit rambling but do any of you see an issue here or am I being ignorant? Thanks ladies!

Re: arm and hammer question

  • Other companies make baking soda...

    Bob's Red Mill:

There are also generics and no-name brands selling baking soda... don't know if they're just repackaged A&H, though.

The Girl is 5. The Boy is 2. The Dog is 1.

    I am the 99%.
  • Also, A&H's baking soda presumably has been the same formula for a very long time, so I doubt the baking soda itself is tested on animals.  Laundry detergent however, is routinely tested on animals because it's an eye and skin irritant for people.  So A&H is testing their detergent, but it's likely they're not still doing animal testing on their baking soda.

The way corporations test detergent on animals is permanentely seared into my brain from Animal Liberation. I can see the picture of the baby rabbits when I close my eyes.  Corporations sucks all the liquid out of the detergent, smears it into baby rabbits eyes (their eyes are the closest to human eyes), then bandage their eyes shut and checks on them periodically to see how long it takes them to go blind.  It's so horrific, I can see the picture of the scarred, blind rabbits every time I close my eyes.  ::Shudder::

  • I actually recall that exact same clip of the detergent experiment with the rabbits supergreen- horrifying. I did not remember what product they were testing though.

I kind of figured they did not test the baking soda specifically anymore on animals but in the interest of trying to support companies that do no animal testing on any of thier products the pp suggestions of different baking sodas were very helpful- thanks!!
