Green way tp get rid of poison ivy?

Hello all,

Our yard is filled with poison ivy. I've tried digging it up and wearing long sleeves/pants, but I still get it. I've had it FOUR TIMES this year and it's only May. The last time it was so bad, they put me on prednisone for a month and a topical ointment.  Is there anything out there that will kill the poison ivy, but not the grass and won't make the soil unuseable?

I am really trying to avoid using Roundup or any chemical, but I'm at my wits end.

FYI, DH is also severely allergic.

Thanks!

  • I use products from Melaleuca and here's a recipe for a weed killer that will possibly work without using the chemicals found in roundup.

Mix 1/4 cup Tough & Tender with 1 gallon vinegar and 2 cups salt

Also, my son is severely allergic to bug bites and he swells up pretty bad. We rub melaleuca oil (tea tree oil) on his bites and use melagel to keep them from scarring. You could try something like that if you come in contact with the poison ivy.

  • This recipe worked on our poison ivy last year.  It's worth a shot: http://gogreenforgreen.wordpress.com/2009/05/25/salt-and-vinegar-not-just-a-tasty-potato-chip-flavor/

It's just vinegar, salt and water.

    Good luck!

  • Frequent lurker here, but I'm gonna butt in

Even though it may look ugly, after using the recipe the pp suggested (I've used it on a huge old hairy poison ivy vine that had taken over a tree and it worked) don't try to remove the vine until after it has died. If it is still green, the oils still have the potential to cause a rash. After it has dried, the oils are no longer present and it's much safer to handle.

  • Thanks everyone for your advice. I will definitely try these and thanks for reminding me that it is not dead until there is no green!

You can actually still get PI from dead vines...the oils don't go away.  Make sure to wear gloves even if it is dead!
