We got into a phone conversation last night during a "good night" call about the state of our relationship, and how each of us thinks the other holds back in certain ways.
I could not longer contain what I'd been holding in, and gave him a long explanation of how I felt about our relationship/him, which culminated in the ol' ILY.
He was. . .surprised, I think. After a pause, he laid the "thanks for sharing" on me. The call ended pretty soon after that, as I was rather anxious to get off the phone and sit around for an hour like this:
We have a dinner date tonight. Should be interesting!

Wow. Just... wow. I can totally get that he was caught off guard. Especially if you'd never said it before. Was the general "state of the relationship" opinion from him pretty good, though? I am assuming yes since you felt comfortable to drop the ILY on him.
I'd like a full dinner recap ASAP, tomorrow, please.
His opinion on the state of the relationship was that he was concerned that he might be moving too fast, or getting too involved, and that I might not be in the same place emotionally as him.
So, since I was sure of my feelings (and had planned to tell him soon anyway), I thought it might be an appropriate time to go ahead and let him know. I kinda did expect the sentiment to be returned, given his concerns. Imagine my surprise!
I hope there's booze at dinner.
