Re: m
Greetings! Welcome to the Albany area. I live in Niskayuna. It's a fabulous town, about 15 min to the airport. WONDERFUL school district, people walk, run and ride bikes in the nice weather. There are TONS of great houses for sale that you can get for a steal! Kids play in yards, ride bikes around. Overall it's just a great area to live and I couldn't be happier.
Feel free to PM for more info. I'm more than happy to help! NY is awesome, close to city, ocean, have tons of lakes, great autumns and apple cider donuts. yum!?
My Blog
I grew up in Niskayuna, but live in Clifton Park now. Both are great, safe places. Taxes are much cheaper in CP if you're planning on buying; however, some areas of CP may be more than 20 minutes from the airport (although not much).
I would also recommend: Latham, Loudonville, Guilderland. Some other suburbs that are nice, but may be slightly more than 20 minutes from ALB, are: bethlehem and delmar.
Welcome to the board!! I used to be a flight attendant and I lived about five minutes from the airport. I would recommend Latham, Loudonville, and Niskayuna all close to the airport. I know a couple of pilots that live in Latham and Loudonville. I know some pilots who had a crashpad in Rotterdam and they always made it to the airport in plenty of time. I have flight attendant friends who lived 45 minutes from the airport, but if they were ever on reserve they always made sure they were ready to go because they had to be on the plane within an hour of the call.
Other places around here are great, but if he has to make it to the airport within an hour, park, go to the hanger, and be on the plane ready to fly you may want to live close. I say the closer the better. Any questions feel free to ask me.
Hello and welcome! I agree with fenway, Latham and Loudonville are very close to the airport, are very very safe, and have excellent neighborhoods. I grew up in Loudonville and literally lived about 5 minutes from the airport. They also have one of the best school districts in the area if you are looking for that kind of thing. Are you looking to rent at first? There are some nice apartment complexes in the area. Here are a couple links of the complexes I can think of:

Welcome!
I would definitely add Niskayuna and Guilderland to your list. I'd personally skip Watervliet.
We bought about 18 months ago in Bethlehem (Glenmont/Delmar area), which I love. That would also probably be within airport commute range via Rt. 85. We chose the area over Guilderland predominantly because Calvin & I both work in downtown Albany, and Bethlehem is a much shorter commute for us. We shopped by school district (no kids yet, but planning on it eventually), and Guilderland and Bethlehem were among our top choices. Nisky would've been up there but for the fact that Calvin's job requires Albany county residency, and Niskayuna is in Schenectady county.
Are you going to be job hunting once you get here? School? Renting may be useful until you figure out where you'll spend most of your time; traffic can be a pain in certain areas/at certain times of the day.
Hey, what's wrong with Watervliet? I live there! I personally live in a nice quiet neighborhood where I don't pay thousands for rent every month unlike other places.
um, whoa there? Is there a reason for the snark? I offered my own experiences to the OP, where I looked and where I didn't... I didn't say anything was objectively right or wrong with any place. I'm not really looking to debate the relative merits of various capital region communities; they make both vanilla & chocolate a reason.
I'm not being snarky.. I'm stating my persnal experience, that's all... just like you did.
